Never heard of Proscan before. But at such a low price for a 55' LCD 1080P HDTV 240 Hz I'm tempted to learn more.

Have any of you bought this tv yet? Any usefull reviews? Looking for any information about this tv.

Thanks

But not one about the 55' 240 Hz tv.

If your buying from Costco then just go ahead and grab it...See if you like it, if you don't just return it.

By the way their is a thread on here I just read about a different Proscan model and everyone seemed to be happy with it.

ProScan used to be a high-end TV manufacturer way back... but the brand has long since been purchased by another company. I wouldn't purchase any of these "old manufacturer's brand" sets what with the fiasco with Polaroid TVs a few years ago.

I've seen reports that ProScan TVs have poor picture quality anyway. If you want to save money, get a Vizio. They're a trusted brand nowadays and offer a lot of bang for the buck.

Proscan used to be the "high end" RCA model when RCA was a USA company. Now that RCA and all other electronics companies have moved out of the US (except for VIZIO whose TVs are also manufactured elsewhere), the grand old names such as RCA, Sylvania, Magnavox, Westinghouse, Emerson, and even the once prestigeous Proscan are now all just shadows of their former selves and most are 3rd tier bottom feeders.

Polaroid sure put some crap out on the streets. But part of me wonders.... times have changed. Certain countries have become very good at replicating quality products. And we have made huge advances in the LCD tv area.

But you brought up Polaroid and it brought back memories of a crap tv I had on my boat... Hmmmmmm.. But if it's a Costco purchase I have two years to return it.

It more than likely will not be a great TV but you can return it within 90 days so I say why the heck not?

Costco extends that to two years.
I think I'll wait a week or so and let a few people buy this tv. Hope someone can chime in who owns one.

Do you really think that everybody who buys a TV from Costco or anyplace else immediately jumps on this Forum? I'm guessing at least 95% or more of all TV buyers have never even heard of AVS Forum. Everybody I know owns at least one TV, but I don't know one single person who spends time on here. How do I know? Because I've asked.

Right now there are 494 people viewing the AVS LCD Forum? How many of them are going to run to Costco to buy a 3rd tier Proscan TV? My guess would be maybe 1... Guess who that is?

Proscan was simply an RCA set with all the extra Features, like XBR is to SONY. Who know what they are these days, RCA doesn't even make their own TV's.

First off BoilerJim I don't care much for your cander.

Secondly; there are many of us here that wouldn't mind a nice looking 55' 1080P 240Hz LCD HDTV for less than 1300.00. Last time I checked this has never been offered before. At least not anywhere near this price level.

Some of us have other passions that cost a bunch of money and we don't feel like paying $3500.00 for a 55' LCD when we may get one for $1200. And many of us are fully capable of the basic reasoning behind a no questions asked two year warrenty.

And if 5% of the people that buy this tv are on this forum then I'd say we have a pretty good chance of hearing from someone that owns one.

I looked up the word cander in the dictionary and Merriam/Webster said it wasn't a word. So, I'm guessing the word you mean is the similarly-spelled candor which is what I thought you meant and just didn't know how to spell it.

If so, that is quite a compliment since the two main definitions of candor are:

1. The state or quality of being frank, open, and sincere in speech or expression; candidness: The candor of the speech impressed the audience.

2. Freedom from bias; fairness; impartiality: to consider an issue with candor.

Synomyms for candor are openness, frankness, honesty, truthfulness.

I do pride my sense of candor in dealing with the answers to questions posed on this Forum and I thank you for recognizing it. That's why I gave you my sincere responses to your original question. I'm sorry if it wasn't the answer you hoped it would be.

Good luck in your search for the perfect TV for you. I hope you are very happy with whatever you choose.

BoilerJim,

I'd really like to get to know about this tv. If you happen to know anything about this particular television then please do enlighten us. As you can tell by the title of this thread we are talking about a 55' Proscan 240 Hz LCD. It's currently offered at Costco.

Some research has turned up that Proscan, formally manufactured by RCA was sold out to Oncorp.
http://www.oncorpus.com/about/Oncorp.htm

Parkwood Crossing 450 East 96th street Suite 500 Indianapolis, IN 46240 (Right down the street from BoilerJim
)

Unfortunately this tv was not listed on their web site. So this information may not be accurate.

If anyone ends up buying this model please give us some feedback.

Thanks,

No more so than Lexus is "simply a Toyota with all the extra features". Lexus LS is one of the best cars in the world for more than 10 years.

It could be a while before you get any direct feedback on that particular model. Even then, IMHO, the bigger issue is how reliable the ProScan is going to be over time.

So, if you want the features without the higher price of an established brand, you take the risk of lesser reliability over a period of years.

I think you would do better with an established brand, namely, Vizio. Vizio has a good record both with performance and reliability. While more than a few people on this Forum don't consider Vizio a top tier brand, Consumer Reports does consider Vizio top tier.

In my local Sams Club, the Vizio VF551XVT has the best picture quality of all the sets they have on display. Yes it is hundreds more than the ProScan, but it is also a proven company and model.

Best Regards

NON STOP for 3 years. Not bad for crappy TV's.

Not bad at all.
Perhaps I just had a bad one. Not to mention that my Poloroid tv was used on a 37' cruiser. So it was using shore power, then a gen set, then a power inverter. Got cold in the winter and was exposed to the vibration of twin cat 3208s on long trips. So mine was in a hostile envirenment. Perhaps I was a little harsh to judge all of their products based on this one tv.

Now I'm seeing a 55' Toshiba for about the same money at tiger direct. But it only has a 30-60 day warrenty. So do I throw the dice on an unknown brand that has an unconditional 2 year warrenty or go mail order with a trusted brand with a short warrenty.

This can be a bit tough.

This can be a bit tough.

If you want it, buy it! I'm offering this advice with all sincere candor.

I tried looking up the TV and accompanying reviews on it using Google, but apparently it's only offered at Costco and there is nothing else on it yet. However, since you are obviously intrigued by it and since Costco offers the 2-year warranty, go for it. Heck, it's only money.

BoilerJim,

I'm fishing for people that have purchased this tv. Trying to get a review from someone else. Someone who took the proverbial plunge and took it home and has now watched a movie or two on it. I'd like to go on something more substantial than "if you want it buy it type" of advise.

I do appreciate your wanting to help in this thread. Thanks to you we have all been rudely reminded to hit spell check before posting.
But I'm more interested in finding information about the tv.

Perhaps you can drive down the street and ask them about their products. And why the 55' is not listed on their page. I'm here in Louisville an don't feel the need to make the drive at this time.

Back on topic... If you have bought this tv or have any usefull information I / we would like to hear what you have to say.
