I've played around with this a bit and have been able to play regular video, but is it possible at all to play any drm'd iTunes downloaded video content across the same pipe to the tv? Is it only special software that can do this, or does it essentially come down to having to connect appleTv or pc/mac with iTunes directly in order to play this kind of content?

Well, the new NAS from Promise the NS4600 does note it can play DRM'd iTunes files, but, not sure how it all work--good idea though. But, these were supposed to debut this April, but, I've yet to see one anywhere, and are pretty scarce online. Here's the thread to keep an eye on.

I had a good conversation with one of their engineers at the last Macworld and he noted how they're a much more active member of the DLNA group than others like Buffalo, and actively work with other members like getting the Pioneer Elite Blu-ray drives to play nice. That's my one reason to keep an eye, to get DLNA working again on my blu-ray player.
