Has anyone seen this ? Wonder if it does work "magic". Maybe the engineering mind and physicist out there can shed some light on this.

Pretty cheap tweak if it does work as promised.

The plugs aren't even polarized. Wonder if it converts light into electrical noise if you plug it in upside down?

Not a cheap tweak IMO... more like an expensive lesson.
There's a similar product put out by AudioPrism I believe. AudioPrism also sells something they call a 'sniffer' that detects higher frequency components on an AC line. Their thinking, which is analogous to PSAudio, is the more Prisms you put on your lines, the quieter your lines become. This is monitored by the the 'sniffer' which puts out an audible signal, the strength of which is somehow proportional to the amount of noise. Not too long ago, a fellow posted on AVS about his experiences with the 'sniffer'. Sure enough he found it to emit a sound when plugged into the AC lines directly but when he plugged it into the outlet of his surge protector/conditioner (might've been a Panamax or Monster...not sure), the 'sniffer' was quiet.

The way these type of products work is the innards contain some basic circuitry that has inductors and capacitors. Maybe a resistor too. Not too long ago I posted a typical circuit diagram for such a circuit. In PSAudio's case, perhaps some enterprising person will buy one and split it open for an examination. I'd guess that they're using a small storage capacitor to trigger the LED for effect. If the rest of their info is reasonably accurate, then the only thing in that device is a capacitor.

With respect to PSAudio's link that you provided, some careful reading should be done. For instance...

1) Noise is not always transmitted through the AC. It can be airborn in which case, if it's of sufficient magnitude it can propogate down an interconnect or through some other means.

2) No mention was made of what dimmer was used in their example. We don't know if it was an el-cheapo, defective, or rendered defective. Many people simply don't run their dimmers on the same circuit and those that do, often spend a few extra bucks for HT friendly dimmers like from Leviton.

3) We don't know the level of the noise and for that matter if it resulted in any audible or visual improvement.

4) No 'scope readings were provided for the noise if the the device was plugged into one of PSAudio's products.

5) We don't know over what frequency range it works and if it's filtering is frequency dependent.

I guess you could buy one and plug it into whatever surge protection device you've got to see if it 'blinks'. As PSAudio says, "They can be placed anywhere in the home to do their job and the more the merrier." The only question is who is the one getting merrier?
See less See more
And it doesn't even emit a pleasant scent :(

No, no, no. If you plug it in upside down, it becomes a black hole!!

Kal
Guess if PS Audio is going to have it patented, then maybe they are onto something. If not, well ...

They're going to patent this? That's rich.

Based on recent performance of the US patent office, they'd porobably grant a patent to someone who invents a "round, device, mounted on an axil, enabling heavy loads to be moved with little effort".

At least this one is a easy candidate for blind test !

So if I plugs it into my power conditioner and it still blinks, does it mean that it is doing its job (i.e converting line noise into energy). Lets not discuss whether there will be audible/visible difference (since thats always subjective).

It will be interesting to take one home from a dealer and try it out just for fun.
I found the link to the Audioprism product:

I sent a email to PS Audio as to why theirs costs $100 and in what way are they different. I will post their reply (hopefully they do reply)
Well you can patent anything. Doesn't mean it's functional and besides, you'll have to read the patent to see just what's been claimed. To answer your question wongmb, if you plug it into your power conditioner and it still blinks, all you can really say is that it's still blinking. It may very well be 'harvesting' but again, until someone cracks one open you don't know. Presumably, it ought to either blink significantly less or not at all. If you're going to buy one for evaluation, you might as well buy or borrow the sniffer and/or one of the AudioPrisms. You might find the latter at places like audiogon or even ebay. Have fun up there!

This is a more detailed description from PS Audio web site.

Targus:

Its indeed patented ! You should run to patents office to apply for your "round" invention. :)
got a patent number?

dont know. It just says in the article it is "patented" Would be interesting to see what gets patented if that is true.

Ever hear of "prior art"?

I am not a patent lawyer. Maybe you can explain in layman term.
