Just a quick question. Is it at all possible to letterbox widescreen capable ps2 games on a 4:3 tv? Since it does for dvds, I was thought mabye it would for games too.

I tried that with vice city too, but it just tried to fit everything onscreen so it looked squished on my 4:3 tv. When you tried it, did you get the black bars above and below just like dvds do?

I will try to confirm as soon as possible. I did get black bars on the top and bottom, but I can't remember if the image was "squished." There may be some options to play around with in the "dashboard."

As far as I know, you can only have the letterbox output with DVD's. No system I know of allows you to do it with the games. It would be a cool option, though.

Shawn
If by letterbox you mean black bars on the top and bottom, then I have played many games on XBOX that are formatted in this way. Madden 2003, NCAA College Football 2003, Unreal Championship, Tony Hawk 4 to name a few. These games trigger 16x9 enhanced on my Sony Wega.

Confirmed. I'm currently playing Vice City in 16x9 and it does not look squished to my eyes.

Prime7X,

When I selected the widescreen option in the game's menu, the game did NOT automatically trigger 16x9 enhanced. I had to set my TV to 16x9 mode manually through my TV's user menu.

I suspect the game's 16x9 mode is not "anamorphic." Otherwise, it would have automatically triggered 16x9 enhanced.

Shawn,

Thx man. I kinda thought so. But yeah it would be pretty cool idea. Guess I have to wait till I can buy a new tv.

Tmila,

Yeah I think my tv is too old to even have that 16:9 option. Question though, is your tv widescreen or fullscreen? I'm not sure why a fullscreen tv would have that option at all.

Doo doo,

Yes mabye Unreal might have 16:9, but my question was if I could get the letterbox effect on a 4:3/fullscreen television when switched to 16:9.

If you want to play unreal in letter box format you can by setting the game option for widescreen. I have done this once on my 4/3 36hs500.

Prime,

Unreal is not in 720p but it does offer widescreen support. I dont know why but it works regardless of whether or not your tv is widescreen.

Another reason why the xbox is superior.

Thanks. I'm sure that UC will work wonderfully on Prime7X's PS2.

In case you're having trouble following the thread, this was in response to your allegation that no gaming console supports 16x9.
