PS3 1080p/24 and Pioneer VSX-81TXV

Can Pioneer VSX-81TXV handle 1080p/24? I have a Sharp 52D92U, it says received unknown signal. But it works when directly connects to the TV.

Any idea?

I have the receiver. Yes it does. It will simply pass the signal as is if its 1080p. My HP 1080p 65" DLP takes 1080p/24 and the Pioneer passes it without a problem although my display has the occasional jitter or clipping when displaying this signal. But I think that though your set does 120 Hz refresh it can't accept 1080p/24 which is why your getting that message. Turn 1080p/24 off.

If you have the 24hz set to automatic, does it mean that it's in effect if you don't get a blank or messed up signal?
Man that socks, I was hoping this TV can do 1080p/24 because of 120Hz.

Hmmm. That's a good question. "Automatic" you would think it would automatically adjust to the refresh rate of your set - if its 60Hz the other refresh the PS3 outputs. I wonder then if the Sharp is refreshing at 120Hz and the set can be adjusted to 60Hz refresh and that the problem is the default 60Hz from the PS3 is not being recognized. Seems weird if that were the case though as it would effect cable/satellite input as well.

Could you shut this feature off and report back just to answer our "automatic" question. That would be very helpful. And does your set have an adjustment to output 60Hz or 120 Hz?

Actually I've read your message over more carefully and I see the auto is in fact kicking in to do 1080p/60 when you plug it into the set directly. But again, I'm passing the signal through the same receiver without a problem maybe the incompatibility is between your set and the receiver, another HDCP issue.

If I turn 1080p/24 off it plays fine.

That's pretty strange. Does that imply that if it's set to automatic, that it is running at 24hz? I dont' think my tv is listed as 1080p/24hz compatible.

I can try running a movie that has the stutter on panning scenes & see if there's a difference between off & automatic.

My guess is communication from receiver and TV is different. A receiver doesn't send any video information but maybe TV does.

The receiver SHOULD be sending the video signal. Again, turn 1080p/24 off on the PS3 and send the output through the receiver again. Tell us what happens please.

Yeah I did and it plays fine.

When I said "communication" is different, I meant receiver doesn't send any video information to PS3, so maybe PS3 just sends 1080p/24 to a receiver, but when PS3 connects directly to a TV, maybe a TV sends some type of data saying can't receive 1080p/24, so PS3 converts to 1080p/60 instead. I'm just guessing.

Yes. Looks like the handshake from the receiver to the tv for the 1080p/24 detect is problematic.
PS3 -> 82 TSX -> Pearl

I get a buzzing sound in my speakers with P24 on. I don't get it with P24 off. It's pretty irritating. Since the Pearl does a very competent inverse telecine and displays at a multiple of 24 (96hz I believe), I may just leave the PS3 at 60i.
