The other im hearing is its actully displaying at 720P..but I thought the PS3 was waiting on an update and cant do 720p presently..

Forget everything you've heard, this is the deal:

Your PS3 outputs at the resolutions you yourself have selected in the system settings menu. Make sure 1080i is one of them. Your TV will accept that signal, and scale it to fit its resolution. If 1080i is already highlighted, then that's what your PS3 is outputting and yes it will look 'fantastic.' If it's not highlighted, highlight it and your movies will look even better.

@Vizcaya: Yes, you should set it for 1080i in order to maximize your BD content viewing experience. Make sure both 720p and 1080i are selected, so that it will default to 720p for game content.

@Patton: No HDTV lacks support for 1080i input; they all accept it. There's a situation where some older CRT RP HDTVs don't accept a 720p signal, and in these instances games rendered in 720p are downscaled to 480p. But for BD playback, and your TV set anyway, none of this applies.

Hold up, i thought the PS3 downconverts to 480p if your TV DOESN'T support 720p and only 1080i? So if your TV does support 720p, it should be displaying 720p, yes?

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40S2010 with a native resolution of 1366 x 768. Will i run into any problems??

yes, if you want to view your BD's in HD, 1080i is it for the PS3 for now until a firmware update we all are waiting for is released..

This was discussed few days ago. It is true that all HDTVs now can take 1080i input. However not all HDTV will correctly scale down to 720P correctly as was pointed out by Jayselle.

Most 720 display convert 1080i content by de-interlacing to 540p. It the up-scales 540p to 720p. So our displays are getting a 540p up-scaled image.

If the player does the scaling it can actually convert 1080p to 720p without interlacing. Thus our display gets a true 720p image not up-scaled. Would you agree that 720p > 540p?

A similar example would be taking a 2MP image and converting it to a 0.5MP image. Now convert the 0.5MP image to 1.0MP. The ultimate result is you are scaling up a 0.5MP image to 1.0MP image. It would be much better to simply convert the 2MP image to a 1.0 MP image.

I have a question regarding PS3. I don't own one yet but will within the next month and a bit.

My TV (Pioneer PDP-4270HD) apparently accepts 1080p 24hz signals. Does that mean I should set my BD playback on PS3 to 1080p or 1080i?
