I use my son's Sony Playstation 3 as our blu-ray player. I have an old 5.1 Onkyo receiver that does not decode DTS, nor does it have any HDMI inputs (but it does decode 5.1 dolby digital). Right now I get my video to my HDTV from the PS3 via HDMI, and I get sound to my receiver via optical. My receiver also has coaxial inputs. I (think I) see that the PS3 can decode DTS (and dolby digital).

When I have been playing blu-ray movies that only have DTS audio, I have not been able to get any sound. I can only get sound from a blu-ray movie when it has 5.1 dolby digital audio.

Is there a way to get the PS3 to decode the DTS sound and send it to my reciever so that my receiver can play 5.1 sound? If the answer is 'Yes', can you please tell me how to do it?

Thank you,

Afaik, not if your receiver cannot accept HDMI audio and doesn't decode DTS.

There are DTS-only discs? Example please.

Pretty much all Fox BDs. The only lossless tracks are dts-MA, meaning the optical output from a PS3 will be DTS. Master and Commander, for example, has English dts-MA and several DD foreign language tracks. There are no other English choices.

Hello,

I have a ps3 connected optically (and coaxially via a converter) to a Cambridge Soundworks CSW3000 amplifier that doesn't decode DTS. The three letters "DTS" are never mentionned in the CSW3000 specs or manual, contrary to Dolby Digital that is decoded as expected.

When I put the Don Giovanni blu-ray in it, which offers only dts-hd ma stereo and 5.0, my amplifier does play the sound, through the main left and right speakers only, and without lighting the "dolby digital" led. Changing from "pcm linear" to bitstream doesn't change anything according to my ears, it still plays.

I am really curious about how my non dts receiver can play dts sound. I didn't setup anything. Does anyone have any clues ? Is it even possible to get 5.1 somehow ?

Thanks !

You're either passing some kind of 2-channel PCM downmix via the optical connection or via a 2-channel analog connection (if you have one). You should be able to apply some sort of DSP such as DPLII in order to get some pseudo-surround sound.

No, but as per my answer above, you should be able to pass some sort of 2-channel PCM downmix. To which you can apply DPLII (or DPLIIx if 7.1) or other DSP. You need to connect the PS3 directly to the receiver for the audio, though. For a couple of reasons.

First of all, most (but not all) TVs cannot pass-through multichannel audio from HDMI to their optical outputs. They simply pass a 2-channel downmix. So, even with a DD5.1 soundtrack, your TV may not be passing through DD5.1. And it may not be able to pass-through a DTS downmix at all; only a DD downmix.

Thanks for the answer.

What I wonder is how did I manage to get some pcm downmix ? I didn't configure anything on the PS3. How does it know it has to send something else than DTS ? (I don't have any analog connection)

About DPL... How can I get it out of the ps3 ? Does DPL processing work with out-of-the-box pcm downmix from the ps3 ?

Thanks

You may want to ask this in a PS3 thread.

You apply this in your receiver. Yes, it works with any stereo source.

You mean, a PS3 forum I guess. Thanks anyway, I'll do that.

No, he probably means THIS thread.

And it probably defaults to sending a 2 channel PCM downmix when it encounters DTS material. Or there IS a 2-channel PCM track encoded on the disc that it is defaulting to.

If you notice in the optical output settings of the PS3, if you have DTS unchecked, then the PS3 will automatically send a PCM 2.0 downmix regardless of whether you have Linear PCM or Bitstream set on BD output. It has to send the next available format and 2 channel PCM is permanently checked on. If you were to check DTS on and then select Bitstream, you won't receive any sound at all from your receiver because you are forcing the PS3 to send the DTS Core track bitstream and your receiver is incapable of decoding it.

It won't send the DTS core track bitstream if you have DTS unchecked regardless of whether you have BD output set to bitstream.

Such is the case for my own setup.

As for surround encoding on the PS3 downmix, I'm searching for the same info. Subjectively speaking, it appears that it does.
