I was considering upgrading my home computer and spending about $2k to get some hardware with some decent encoding speeds. But I was thinking I have a pretty powerful processor in the ps3 and the ability to run linux. So my question is:

Has anyone had any experience encoding HD files on the PS3 using YDL? I heard it was basically near real time but I wanted to see if anyone had more experience doing it. Seems like the perfect platform to get the work done.

you may want to think about a new Geforce card.

There's an app coming soon that will allow the GPU to do H.264 encoding...and very very fast.

The folding app for these cards has it folding 10x faster than Cell on the high end cards.

I saw that but it's still vapor ware. Could be a year or more. You know how those things go. I've been waiting so long already. This would hold me over till that app came out though. And it's free!
