PS3 Infrared Support! NEW SOLUTION - Full XMB Fuctionality!

If you have a harmony or other learning remote, you can now have full (almost) functionality on your PS3 including in the XMB and Blu-Ray! A new infrared remote from logic3 is targeted specifically for PS3 use.

For link, go to amazon(dot)co(dot)uk and search ps3 blu-ray dvd remote I can't post the link yet, so someone below, feel free to do so.

In all honesty, the remote is junk, but you will only be using it once to teach your harmony. Then throw it out or put it away. What you are really after is the infrared dongle. With this thing, I was able to successfully teach my harmony all functions of the logic3!

Something to note. When teaching the arrow codes, use RAW mode. Everything else can be learned in normal mode.

There are 2 catches.

1- Slow response. About a 1/2 second delay after pushing a button for response.

2- No PS button. The logic3 remote does not have one, so there is no way to teach your harmony.

Very convienent and everything works perfectly! Once again, I have one remote to control it all! I can answer whatever questions you might have.

According to the manufacturers site it is an IR remote.

Not sure why it is only available in Europe, the company does have products in the US.
I purchased it from the manufactur UK store, and I live in the US. Arrived in 2 days. Real quick shipping. Thanks for posting the link.
I don't see any PS specific buttons. Have they been mapped to more obvious buttons, like X = Enter, Triangle = Menu, Circle = Back?

It works in BD playback okay?

So if there's no PS button, then there's no way to power down or power up?

Life would be simpler if LogiTech would sell a dongle to support my 880.
I used the steps in (sorry, I cant post links) avsforum id 761809 (using MrSniffer's button mapping) with my Harmony 550 (xbox version).

It's a little more expensive (cost me $15 total) but I hear you get better results learning commands (like the directional keys) with the actual Sony remote.

Edit: Sorry, missed the part about full XMB support. The above solution really only works for BD/DVD playback.

Do the directional keys work in XMB also? Also, did you get the popup menu button working as well?

Thanks for the update deficitism!

Exactly.

Works like a champ! The basic BD/DVD features work great. Unfortunetly, not nearly as many options on the logic3 as the Sony PS3 remote, but it gets the job done.

This is correct. There is no PS button on the logic 3, therefore no way of learning the codes for the PS button.

If you love using your harmony for everything, this is the best solution so far. The lack of PS button (for now) is a drag, but if you think about it, when you pop a disk in, the system automatically turns on. Turning it off may require... *GASP* Walking to your PS3 and doing it manually.

Answer in subject... Yes. This new IR remote dongle allows you to use all directional keys in the XMB. Works in everything that the bluetooth remote worked in. (PS Store, Browser, BD/DVD, etc...)
Ok thanks. I order it now !! Thanks for the link !!
I get this error message when trying to order:

We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order by changing its quantity to 0 and clicking the update button below.
If you go to the Logic3 website:
http://www.spectravideo.com/region.htm
you can find the remote if you select the UK region. Once you register with a US address, you won't be able to buy it...
That's odd. Thats exactly how I bought it. US account from UK store. I think the steps I took were: (1) Add the remote to my cart (2) Sign up with US address on checkout.
I also get that message when trying to purchase from the US. Bummer...

BTW, the PS button support is more than just mapping a key. The PS3 must keep power on the USB port so that remote wakeup is possible.
I think that USB ports are powered when the PS3 is in standby

The controllers do not charge in standby so I think the USB ports are not powered in standby.
If there is no power on USB ports in standby, no PS3 power on by IR remote.

But if we can mapping the PS button, we can use it for power off....
It occurred to me another problem of not having a PS button is that it is used to switch between activities.

For example, I use the PS3 to play MP3s, and I use the PS button to browse to another song or to switch to the web browser, without interrupting the currently played song.

Not having this functionality would be a major annoyance.
Can we just get an IR box that outputs blutooth signals that the ps3 understands
How hard can it be?

An IR remote could still power on the PS3 if there was an intermediary device between IR and Bluetooth- a little device that listened for IR codes and spit out translated Bluetooth signals.

I think once the third party BD remotes start showing up we will see a device like that.
