PS3 is now a Wi-Fi Media Center. Check it out...

In your Windows Media Player just go to Options --> Library --> Configure Sharing.

If your PS3 is on, it should already be recognized as an unknown Wi-Fi device.

Tell it that you want this device to have access and voila, you now have a streaming media center for all of your music, videos, pictures, etc! Music, video, images all stream directly from your PC to the PS3 and onto your TV.

I'm an idiot and this took me literally 3 minutes to set up without directions.

WHAT an update!

Thanks for the chuckle

It took me longer but it was because I had to add all my mp3s to Media Player.
I hope this works with Vista Home Basic because I just ordered that by mail a few days ago and I know it has very stripped down networking.
Unfortunately this "Wi-Fi Media Center" doesn't seem to be able to reliably stream MPEG2 or MPEG4 videos. I've been able to listen to MP3's and video photos but haven't found a single video file that will stream.
Has anyone tried to stream from I-Tunes? Is that even possible?
Rumor is that it works with TVersity which transcodes video files on the fly.

The video format support is iffy at best, I converted some stuff to AVC and it works from a directly connected hard drive, I will test it tonight over the ethernet.
I was disappointed to find that it does not recognize WMA Lossless. I don't understand why this is such a common issue. It would be somewhat understandable if the PS3 had to decode the lossless stream itself, but all it has to do is request that the decoded stream be sent instead. Hopefully TVersity will work.
I can see my computer and it displays folders for music video etc, But there is nothing in the folders. My 360 sees everything ok but the PC seems to be looking at my c drive and not my external media drives. Can anyone help?

i'd return vista basic if i were you. if you're running xp now home basic is not a worthy upgrade, if it's even an upgrade at all. get home premium at the minimum. why get vista if u're not going to get its aero features.

There are many media servers (free and commercial) for linux available. Works with most of them. (For example TwonkyVision, ushare, mediatomb).
It doesn't support WMA lossless (as stated before), which sucks. It found all my photos, but none music (files are there, but when you go to play one..."unsupported format" comes up). I only store music this way because the XBOX 360 can stream it in lossless. I personally hate MP3's, especially on a high end audio system. It's like buying a Corvette and driving it at no faster than 25 MPH.

Great I didn't know that
See less See more
Is this streaming accomplished the same way for PS3's that don't have built-in wifi? Can you just go over the router bridge?
Yes my 20 gig works fine. So far for me Nero Media Home plays back most things well. I am having some problems with hd tivo files though. It plays some of them fine but says some are "corrupted files"

Thanks for reminding me that I had Nero Media Home on my computer. It works great. I'm running Vista Ultimate. PS3 found it without a problem.
the ps3 should support more video formats. Hopefully this will be added, and this firmware is only a first step.
OK I'm not finding "options"

I have Vista home premium & when I open the media player the closest thing to options is Tasks-settings-libary setup but nothing in there about configure settings.
