PS3 loses audio on pause...

When playing bluray on our PS3 it loses audio when you pause the movie. It happens in one of two ways: you pause a movie, then if you unpause it before the screensaver (dimming) the audio is there but it it cuts in and out with about 1/2 second on 1/2 second off. If you let it go all the way to screensaver (dimmed screen) then there is no audio on unpausing. The only way I have found to fix it is to go into the movie menu, pick another audio track, hit play, then go back to the menu and pick the original audio track.

The PS3 is hooked up to a projector via HDMI, and the audio is via optical to a Harmon Kardon AVR (no HDMI connections on it).

Is anyone else having this problem? I tried a search but found nothing - are there any solutions?

I'm not having any problem like this using HDMI audio. I don't recall any posts in the main PS3 As A Blu-Ray Player thread over the past 5 months or so mentioning this, but then most people posting here are using HDMI audio and not optical audio.

Is the problem easily repeatable or is it rare?

Off hand, I think you may have a defective PS3. You should consider calling Sony to see if you can get the unit swapped out.

It happens every time, without fail. It's quite annoying really - especially with guests...

To be honest I have not moved the PS3 out of the theater and tested it with other AVR's - I really should do that, I have a couple of cheap Sony AVR's one of which has HDMI I believe - I'm going to test that before calling Sony.

I was just curious if this was a common problem with optical connections (with a common fix)- doesn't look like it!
The problem may very well be your receiver. Which H/K do you have? I have a 247 that's been giving me the same problem thru HDMI and optical. It seems like when the sources are switching from 5.1 to 2.1 the H/K gets bound up and I can clear it by switching sources on the receiver and switching back quickly. It has cleared itself on very RARE occasions.
It's the 525 - I love this AVR, such a shame it can't do all the new formats that are waaay after its time!

I'll try the switching input sources back and forth after unpausing and see if that works to fix up the audio problem. If it does I'll just reprogram my remotes pause to macro to do it automatically.
Krynos, now that you mention it, I've seen the same issue with my AVR525. The switch of audio sources has always given it fits but with the PS3, if I back up a few seconds once I saw there was no audio, it was able to get its act together.

Along the same lines, if the audio switches from 5.1 to 2.0 on a TV broadcast rapidly enough, I just get silence. Switching inputs, as gluvhand suggested, helped in those cases.
