I just bought a PS3. Everytime I put in a "new" game my PS3 automatically saves it to the hard drive. This can take up to 10 minutes. It is very frustrating when a friend brings a new game over for me to try.

Is this necessary? Is there a way to disable this feature? My friends PS3 does not do this.

A lot of game's require installs the first time you play them because the PS3s disc drive doesn't pull data off the disc as fast as that "other" systems 12x DVD drive. It's a minor inconvenience really as very few of them take a whole lot of time. The most ridiculously unnecessary install was DMC4s which took 20 minutes, there was no need of that.

Where it really becomes a PITA is when devs decide 3 minute installs are a good replacement for disc swaps. MGS4 is currently the only game I know of that does this but for some reason instead of installing all the data it needs to up front it performs a 2-3 minute install at each point in the game where there would be a disc swap. That would be all well and good but every time it performs one of these installs it deletes the data from the previous install so in essence instead of switching discs (which took all of 15 seconds) we're now performing asinine installations.

I don't mind installing the game to the disk. And I don't mind downloading updates and installing them prior to playing, too. But for the love of peanut butter, could we please be able to do other things while installing?! Apparently, Sony has never heard of multitasking...

you'll also see that a lot of games download a patch or update from the internet right away too. when i bought the 1st motorstorm a couple weeks ago it needed to do a 233mb download. i just got LBP a few nights ago and it downloaded 2 files right away before i could even play it.

If you just want to try out a game, you can disable the network connection so that it doesn't connect and find a patch. That won't stop a mandatory hard drive installation though. If you then decide you want to seriously play the game, it's recommended that you get the update.

Maybe that's why your friend's console doesn't behave the same way (if you're using the same games on each).

thanks for the replies everyone.

One more question.

I was playing last night with the control plugged in. When is unplugged it the game would stop & the screen said "reconnect remore control". The battery was charged. I was using the remote in wireless mode the day before. I don't get it!

Just press the playstation button after disconnecting the controller and it will wirelessly connect back up to the PS3.
