PS3 Power Supply Unit repair help

Hi, when i using linux in ps3 i heard a 'POP' sound and it turns off and i can't turn it on afterwards. I think there must be something blow up in the PSU. I am a second year electronics student and tempt to repair it myself. But i have not dealt with any power supply and most important thing is I don't have a schematic for it.

I found a picture for the PSU from a website, I have less than 5 post so I can't give the picture or link, but if you type "inside ps3" in Google, the link to the playstation forum will contain a lot pictures of disassembled PS3.

I don't want to disassemble the ps3 before i have any idea about how to fixed it. Cause it will void the warranty. Can it be just a fuse blown, is there any fuse inside the PSU, Can it be one of the capacitors which blown? Can any one give me some advice or guidance? Cheers

I would just return it for a new one. Like you said, if you open it the warranty is voided.
If it's still in warranty, don't mess with it.

Fuses Follow Failures! A fuse opens in modern products after a component fails.

Subbing fuses before passive circuit testing may result in additional damage.

Fixing SMPS (switch mode power supplies) is generally not for the newcomer. Replacement is the preferred option.

PSx products undergo running production changes, so data on one does not mean the next is the same mechanically or electronically.
Thank you for the reply.

I contacted the Sony service center in US. The problem is I am in UK but my PS3 is US version. So Sony will not post back my PS3 internationally, which mean i need a US address! just don't have friends in there, painful!

I would like to know more about the Power Supply Unit. Although I will not disassemble myself, this electronics is too complex for me to handle. Thank u for your help again.
Does any one experience the same failure? If so please share your experience in here. PS3 is stable in general but i am just happen to be the "lucky" one who have a PS3 kaput.
My ps3 has well, its been a soldier in a battle, to say the least, but ok check it out i took it to my friends house and plugged it in to his hd tv , using the regular av jacks, it worked fine, i brung it home and it worked fine, i turned it off and didnt play it for a week or so, used my sd card converter thing, and transfered some information and songs n stuff from my psp to my ps3, everything was working fine, i went to play the darkness for ps3, i put the cd in and the screen locked up and got multicolored from that point on, when i turn on the ps3, only the green light shows up, unless i put a cd in then it turns blue and green but still doesnt do anything , when i turn it on i get a sound from the ps3, sounds like the fan starts running then dies, and i get no picture and no sound, the ps3 is turning on cuz the screen flashes like snowy in the middle, and i can get it to work if i play with it, turning it off and on, for a couple of hours, i bought the cooler jet system. and ive already taken it apart somewhat, , im totally lost here, i cant get ahold of sony ( a real person) to ask them if i can send it in without warranty, and pay for it to be fixed, because i have already voided the warranty.. Someone help please

same problem, voided warranty, ****ing help meeeeeee
Dizasta25 - You're probably not having a power supply problem and you send it in to the same place as a warranty repair. They'll just contact you with a repair cost before sending it back. Sony rapes on repair charges so it's often cheaper to buy a used one than getting a repair.

Sherman - If it's that dead and you heard a pop then it probably lost a power transistor in the power supply and it's likely less than $20 to repair just by blindly replacing the few power transistors on the power supply board. If you're handy you can test which ones are shorted in circuit but pulling them and testing for a short is more of a sure thing. You could probably use parts for a used 350 watt PC power supply since they are doing about the same job.
I have the same problem with another ps3. The power supply appears to be dead. I have checked all of the fuses and all of them are good. I also checked the thermal resistor and the bridge rectifier diodes all of them check out and none of the ic's appear damaged.
This just happened to me too. I'm getting no power to my ps3. I tried all the obvious things.

I wasn't even playing it when it happened. It was off (in stand by mode) when it happened.

My warranty was up a month ago. Which is just terrific.

Any suggestions? Any links to free web sites explaining possible causes and step by step solutions?

Thank you.

This just happened to me, too.

I'm sure it's the power supply.

I chose to pay Sony $150 on the off chance it is something worse or not the power supply. I think to get that $150 it has to still have the warranty seals intact.
