By the end of this week the new new firmware will be up for download. This firmware makes it possible to put up your own wallpapers, music to listen while playing games and DVD's and PS2-games will be upscaled.

I don't think there is an appropriately graphic enough smilie to post in light of this news

Hope it's true, but won't believe it till I see it.
And what about 720p?? For all those who have a plasma tv or another HDTV that is 720p native who would like there to be a POINT to buying expensive Blu-ray discs?

Damn it Sony.
We'll see soon how much, if any of that, is true.

??? I have a 720P front projector and PS3 Blu Ray outputing 1080P looks fantastic. Plasma's scale...virtually everything does.

My Mits 1000 which is native 720P looks better when fed 1080P playing BD than outputing 720P.

The Projector scales better than the PS3.
I agree. My projector does a good job scaling as well. Every time Sony puts an update in I just sigh and say "now where was this months and months ago before I gave up on them?" They can't even churn out a backlit remote. If we get scaling, it will come with a horrible catch, I just know it.
I'm really happy about the PS2 games getting upscaled.
If true, then that would be a great time for me to play God of War 2
Well, today is Thursday, this would be nice.
They would have leaked if it were true. They would be very proud of fixing this issues that should have never been an issue if they had someone competent in charge of the PS3 design. Seems like there were too many chiefs and not enough Indians at Sony leading up to launch.
The one interesting thing about this rumor is we will know very shortly if it is true or false (since the ETA is a week). Hopefully, they not only upscale DVDs/PS2 games, but they do it well. My 360 upscales slightly better than my A2000 (IMO), I'm hoping the PS3 can achieve the same (or better) results.

Set your PS3 to output in 1080i or p and your set should convert. Like another poster said, any decent 720p set should.

All consumer 720p displays will accept a 1080i signal and convert it. The issue is only the other way around with some 1080i displays not accepting a 720p signal. 1080i is ubiquitous (which makes Sony retarded for not specifically dealing with this in their scaling plans for games). As far as whether one's display will scale better than a PS3 with hypothetical built in scaling...that's up for grabs but traditionally 720p displays are fairly good at taking a 1080 source and arriving at 720p native.

Wait. My Tv is 720p native. When I play Blu ray discs I am seeing 720p correct. Blu Ray is 1080p, which the PS3 scales to 720p. Correct?
