PS3 update and 360 smackdown

3743 Views 65 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  A10Fan
I have both consoles (just got the elite) and I have to say this latest update simply smacks down the 360. If they get the games up to par I might even sell the Elite.

At the risk of starting a flame war, I truly believe that once "Home" and "Little Big Planet" hit the PS3, the 360 will be a "last gen" console. These two will be so innovative and groundbreaking they will set new standards to console gaming, and this winter when "Ratchet and Clank" and "Uncharted" come out....oh boy. The future of console gaming is but a few months away.

no no flame war not wanted. Exuberance is setting in and if this keeps going I will be happy to have just one console habit to support !!!

With "Home" and "Little Big Planet" in your post, it's hard to determine whether or not you're being sarcastic.
Yeah those two things are hardly a "smack down" for the 360..I say Sony still has a ways to go but this is a step in a great direction. PS2 games look awesome. Its like having a 1080p PS2..cool.

Guess we'll wait and see. I've never been good at seeing into the future (though I've tried hard *sarcasm*), but from what I've seen of "LBP", although it may be cute to look at, it seems to be something of endless creativity and possibilities. As far as "Home" goes, I'm probably not going to spend much time on it, but I can see the myspace types digging it.

Wait and see...
I love my 360, but my PS3 just went up like a billion pts after this update. The media extending is fast and easy and the upscaling is fantastic. I couldn't be more happy!
Nice additions to the PS3 for sure but lets not get carried away , the 360 has had these features for a long time now
.

With that said I am very pleased to see Sony working so hard on getting the PS3 up to speed and with every update I feel better about the purchase .

To be fair, the 360 couldnt upconvert my playstation 2 games. I have both systems and I'm getting something very new here. I honestly dont still play any xbox games and the 360 doesnt even support them very well. There are still a lot of good PS2 games and I still play some, so upconversion support, for me, is a bigger deal on the PS3 than the 360.

X360 couldn't upscale DVDs except via the unrefined (for most HDTVs) VGA option until recently - and you still have to by a new "Elite" system with HDMI to do it now if you want the best option for TV displays. Sony's cool upgrades are free, so don't get carried away either
.

Anyway I agree... we don't need a system wars thread.

VGA isn't crippled on the 360 with the most recent black level update. Also I don't know what you were implying, but the 360's updates are free as well. That being said, I'm very happy with this PS3 update.......it definitely makes watching movies an even better experience.

He said that VGA is unrefined on most HDTVs, not that there was something wrong w/ how the 360 is currently outputting it. In other words, a lot of HDTVs are supporting excellent HDMI and component inputs, but not VGA inputs. VGA is old and I think a lot of monitors are phasing it out. It is actually kinda weird to me that the 360 didnt just do HDMI or at least DVI.

The other point is that you have to pay more (to upgrade to an elite) to get decent upconversion on a 360 on a lot of monitors.
One of the differences between the PS3 and the 360 that speaks volumes to me though is the frequency of updates. Sony seems to be keeping good pace and fixing things fairly frequently, but it took MS months and months to finally fix their HD DVD issues among other things.

The other thing and I suppose this could be seen as insignificant but as someone that wanted to use his 360 for streaming video and HD playback just fast forwarding when your playing a video on the 360 is choppy and not smooth at all. When I got my PS3 I was so impressed that there wasn't that choppy video when I scanned through the same video file. The 360 definitely has the games right now and I like the controller way better, but it feels really cheap and thrown together when I use it for anything other then that. The PS3 doesn't.

not to be an ass, but how extactly is a 2nd life rip-off that MS could easily emulate and a platformer that if it was on the Wii would be called "kiddy" by most PS3 owners making the XB360 a last gen console. You act like this is stuff the XB360 couldn't easily emulate, if Home takes off MS could just create its own similar feature, and how hard is a physics based Platformer to create, I am guessing not hard at all.

I'm not a big fan of Little Big Planet as the gameplay looks more like a tech demo than fun to me, but creating a completely physics based game isn't easy not to mention the PS3 hardware has the advantage if used properly to build a physics based game around it. So could the 360 have a physics based game? Sure. Could the PS3 hardware have the advantage for a physics based game? Most definitely.

You're also missing another big point. While Microsoft promoted the huge concept of being able to customize your experience and your content before the 360 was launched at their E3 keynote, they have failed to really deliver on that front and that is where Little Big Planet is going to be a huge factor. After a year and a half, Microsoft still hasn't promoted user created content and that is one of the big strengths in this game. Not to mention that Sony plans to take advantage of user created content and release a disc based off the best levels in the community. Sure Microsoft and the 360 could do this, but why haven't they yet and when are they going to? What Little Big Planet is going to try to do is a significant change in how an online community will work with console gaming and you simply can't ignore what it brings to the table.

They added DVD upscale. The X360 already has it.

They added game upscale. The X360 already has it with true 16:9 support on the bigger titles.

They added media streaming. The X360 already has it.

I'm happy the PS3 is catching up. I appreciate having DVD upscaling finally! I really don't see why your excitement translates into making a flamebait post that will simply create trouble here.

Enjoy the PS3 without dumping on others please.

Fortunately there are folks who can do it in under 50 megs on a 360.

Talk about a great thread title. JEESH why not just post "Please lock this"?
I posted this already but I just wanted to post it again.

Go to {Display setting} and enable a new setting called (RGB full range) (hdmi) to Full... Also their is a new (super-white) (HDMI) setting turn that ON also.

My review on this wonderful new settings.

After turning my RGB to full I was blown away on how much more PQ/contrast I got out of my LCD TV set. After some tv calibration, I turned off all the lights in my living room and let the magic begin, started two different titles 1st was SD DVD Training Day, amazing jump in pq, #2 titles BD dvd The Departed... Not only did my blacks get absolute black on both titles but the contract improved greatly with out crushing. I have been up all night playing around with my ps3 testing out different settings I have to say by far this upscaling update makes the ps3 worth ever cent and it will go down in history for setting a standard for home media devices. Best upscaling on the market this whole system is ahead of its time the market hasnt even caught up yet. If i was sony I wouldnt be doing any price drops until next year the system is worth the price. I find it really hard for anyone to find fault with the ps3 now. Yeah yeah yeah but what about games, Their are games for the ps3 so enough of that non-sence. This system at this point in time is by fair the best media player ever created. Blackest I have ever seen a LCD get its just amazing, truley black no more grey.

Upscaling 1080p on ps1/ps2 games is wicked. I poped in GOD of War 2, Shadows of colossus, Kingdom hearts2, RE4 and went Old school with some chronos cross, I coudlnt find a jaggy if I tried. The games where smooth as a babyies bottom. It made me wish I could have played them orginally like that. I didnt think sony could do it but dayum they shut me up. This update makes me want to hunt down all those ps2 games I might have missed or maybe not have finished and start all over again. This update will hold me until the block buster games come out.

After this update i can shamefully apologize for ever saying anything negative about the ps3 ,sony Hats off to you. I will not ever bash one of your products ever again.

Quality over quantity. This is the update that PS3 owners like myself have been waiting for since the system launched, and it took what, six months?

While both companies have a strong record of overpromising and underdelivering, Sony's outstrips that of Microsoft by a mile and half. I'll believe what I see/read when it's available for me to actually try.

The 360's upconversion is merely that - decent. A $60 standalone player will get you better results than any console. The PS3 certainly looked better than my 360 on an SD DVD but still nowhere near as good as my HD-A20.
