PS3 upscaling does miracles with Original Star Wars

Just for the fun of it I put the Original non-anamorphic version of Star Wars Episode 4 from the Limited 2-disc edition in my PS3.

To my surprise...It look totally okey

Much better than on my Sony NS76 upscaling DVD.

Most of the noise and some of the shimmering lines have been cleaned up

It seems that the upscaling in the PS3 does wonders with crappy masters and disc

Now, finally, I can watch the original versions without getting an headache

Try it and give me some of YOUR opinions.

I have not watched Star Wars, but tried some other DVDs and Sony definitely got this right!!

The PS3 is easily as good (if not better) at upscaling than the Toshiba HDDVD players.

I can see a difference in Upscailing but that's it.

It is like painting a rock a different color. it still is a crappy ol'e rock.

I think it is more like putting eye-glasses on (i.e. the image gets sharpened and details become more defined).
Is there a way to zoom a non-anamorphic transfer using the PS3 if the TV doesn't allow it?
This is due to the v1.8 software upgrade? Upload only? Thanks.

i disagree maybe close but not better. i think the toshiba hd-a2 still has the edge.

by the way people saying that if not better do you own both? i know the samsung 1200 is an awesome upconverting blu ray/dvd player and so is the toshiba xa2 both of those walk all over the ps3 and the hd-a2 but like said above you can only do so much with dvd.

You're one of a select few that i see saying the A2 > PS3...

I'll reserve my judgment till I get home and do a comparison test....
It does alot better job then my xbox elite I can say that much.

The only one I can compare it to is the A1, and the PS3 beats the A1 at upconverting like a red-headed stepchild. The image is far sharper and more detailed.

As far as I understand, the A2 upconverts exactly the same as the A1. I'm interested in how the PS3 and XA2 compare, but the XA2 must do a FAR better job than the A1 to even compare.

Not that I can see, which means I would definitely not use the PS3 for non-anamorphic DVDs like the original versions of Star Wars. Sadly, this seems to be the one feature that upscaling DVD players always lack. Here's hoping it comes in a future firmware update!

Sadly the zoom must be done in the TV itself.

The XA2 is better. There are some pictures posted in the BD forum from both, and the XA2 is much sharper and more detailed. Most also seem to prefer the A2 over the PS3, but there is more disagreement on that one.
Too bad it will never look as good as the PremiereHD broadcast. :p

Consider the sources... krinkle is one of the biggest blu-ray/ps3 fanboys on these forums, and while fettastic used to be format neutral, his recent posting history has shown heavy bias towards the ps3/BD side as well.

The PS3's HQV score jumped from 38 to 88 with the 1.80 update. The A2 scored 116. I'll let those numbers speak for themselves.

Actually, its more like I have to take mine of if I want it to look good

And as for upscaling, I have yet to see anything better than the Oppo, be it an A2 or anything else.

How many players have you seen? Everyone has said that the XA2 and the reon-based denons are far better than any Oppo in upscaling. I had an Oppo 981 and happily returned it. No major difference b/w that $200 Oppo and a $75 Sony 75H. That faroudja chip is overrated. benchmark scores don't mean everything...
I put in Bad Boys 1 and the blue came through horribly on the PS3 -- is it just the movie or does anyone have any issues with the blue color coming through to much? I let it sit at the standard option for upconverting (not full / double) - that should be the correct one right?

I have no issues with blue through my dvd-player (xp50) or HD-broadcast
