I just got a new, but old receiver and hooked it up to my PS3 and I am experiencing a minor (but annoying) sound issue. When I am in the XMB and go from left to right or right to left I do not hear the clicking sound that I normally hear when I move around the XMB. However, if I hold down the button to move left or right it eventually starts making the sound. To explain a little better, if I move through the XMB slowly I get no sound. If I move through it quickly I will eventually get the clicking sound. I haven't noticed any other sound issues so far, although I just hooked this thing up so I may find some in the future. Here is how I how it is hooked up, along with my settings:

PS3 to TV using HDMI

PS3 to receiver (Kenwood VR-7070) using Optical Digital

When I am in XMB it shows "Stereo" on the receiver, when I am gaming or watching a movie it shows "Dolby Digital".

Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated

How long have you had the optical cable?

It's brand new. I tried it with a different optical cable with the same result. I noticed that when my PS3 is on the XMB and the receiver shows "stereo" that it does not show a center channel. I feel like that's normal since I always though stereo meant L and R speakers, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

I don't know what's causing it, but I have a feeling that since the receiver isn't receiving a continuous sound then it just doesn't pick up on the clicks until there are a bunch in a row. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a why to fix this? It's not a huge deal, but it's annoying to me when things don't work exactly how they should.

It's normal. The slower you scroll, the less it will pick up the sound. The faster

you scroll, the faster it picks up the sound. Tried it with any optical receiver.

This is most likely your answer. There is a little delay between your receiver getting a signal and it starting to make sound. Mine does the same thing. I don't know how to fix it other than finding a theme with longer beeps

For a quick test. Play a music track, and with it playing flick back to the XMB. If you get ticks with background music going I'd suspect your receiver mutes the outputs when it receives 0 bit (silence) over optical.

I appreciate all of the replies. It looks like it is something that cannot be fixed and I'll just have to live with it. If and when I upgrade to an HDMI capable receiver will that solve the problem or do they have the same issue?

It will solve the problem. As ndskyz noted it's the way toslink receives the signal. I had this issue too before upgrading to a receiver with HDMI.
