Looking at an open box projector with a 30 day no question asked refund/return policy. Is it still too risky? It's an Optoma brand. Is there anyway to verify how much life has been used on the lamp if I take it home?

Thanks

they can reset the lamp hours, but the lamp hour are listed. If it was returned to a store with a 30 day return policy it can't be TOO risky.

Well the return policy is for me, not sure what the original policy was. They said if I purchased it open box and didn't like it or found issues, could return within 30 days and get a full refund. Makes me feel better, but wanted to be able to verify lamp life. Would hate to find out down the road it had 25% of it's life used up before returned or something similar.

It would have to be with a very nice discount and hopefully the bulb has less than 100 hours on it..that's how I feel.

Are they giving you a decent discount ?

Huge discount over regular price, but only 10% off lowest seen clearance price. Problem is, I can't find any at the lowest clearance price that are new in box within a 500 mile radious. About 30% off the next best clearance price I've seen.

Any guarantees on the lamp life being under 100 if the computer says so? ie., is there a way to tell if the counter has been reset?

People buy stuff all the time and then return it for all kinds of reasons - didn't like it, realized it they couldn't afford it and etc.

Usually, open box is a return within a very short calendar "window" and the merchandise is new but the box was opened.

Usually, the full original warranty still applies.

We are all brainwashed to one degree or another that buying new is the only way to buy things. I would never buy a new car - the depreciation is a killer - we always buy vehicles around two years old and suffer the consequences of saving a ton of money while enjoying most of the original factory warranty.

We bought our projector at a close out store - big box store shelf unit - had less than 100 hrs on it - almost three years later we are still enjoying it - we paid about 25% of the then current new unit price.

If you must plug it in, turn it on, walk through the menus and then take it hope enjoying the savings.

Took the plunge. Claims to only have 7 hours on it! Amazing if true! I am guessing someone "rented" it for a Super Bowl party and then returned it afterwords. Of course, they could have just reset the hours.

Now on to building my own budget screen.

projector = Optoma HD65.

Effectively paid 1/2 of current market rate and 1/3 of original street price.
