Wouldn't your friend be way ahead to buy you a DVD burner (Panasonic DMR E-20 - about $700) and let you record his episodes for him and mail them to him.

Well it's a fascinating concept but not much has been done on it yet. How well you can push would depend on what kind of connection you have. With some of the other things going on here you might be able to "extract" and then push mpegs to be played as files or DVD's on that end. Might be more work? Dedicated 4K box would sure be cool and cooler if adapted to do local there.
