Is it possible to play games on a htpc while time-shifting television programming? If so, does the video quality suffer?

Would a pvr card with hardware mpeg2 be better for this?

What cards have a hardware mpeg2 encoder?

I was just interested to know if anyone here has any experience with this.

Um, I seriously doubt this will work at all. You've chosen two of the most demanding classes of applications. PVR will be compressing the video and that is CPU intensive. Even with a HW compressor, you are using a lot of system bandwidth shipping the data around. Computer games are not exactly "good citizens" when it comes to sharing the resources. They are designed for maximum responsiveness and performance. Game developers make a lot of assumptions about "owning" the machine.

I'd suggest a second PC for PVR. It doesn't need a fancy display adaptor if you network it and use your htpc for playback.
