Ok, during the last local home theater meet someone brought to the attention of the group a feature many of us were not aware of. For those that cannot stand waiting through the FBI disclaimers, commercials, and other BS, you cannot set a bookmark for each and ever one of your DVD's.

I would imagine its using something similar to the mechanism in CDDB to recognize one DVD from the next, and appends to whatever script/bookmark-file the relevant location to start from. I found this to be a very worthwhile feature and wonder if this feature will make it into other Immersive Inc. products, especially the aSimilator.

Anyone know?

wanman,

Can you explain again? Are you saying that you CAN or CANNOT set a bookmark for each and every one of you DVDs?

I'd much prefer an option that allows you to jump quickly to the next sequence when you're watching the FBI warnings. On my panasonic RP56 I noticed that the fast forward usually works if you use the knob on the front panel (not the remote control button).

You CAN set a bookmark for individual DVD's in the new TT. I am asking if this feature will migrate itself to the aSimilator product. BTW, I sent Immersive a pre-sales question via email.

please- what does TT stand for?

I notice several new DVD players can recognize / bookmark DVD's: the Lexicon RT-10 can bookmark up to 30 DVD's: this is a great idea to bypass the FBI warning (which I heard you cannot do)

wanman,

The aSimilator uses a hardware DVD player. I assume it will support only the functionality it will offer to what that DVD transport uses. Since Immersive will not be programming the DVD player themselves (they are rightly concentrating on the scaling aspects), I doubt writing to them will be of any use.

I believe that many DVD players remember where you were on a per-DVD basis (up to around 20 DVDs). I'm not sure that it bypasses the FBI warnings (I don't think so).

Toshiba/Onkyo players have a goto option (also quite useful for bypassing RCE titles) that allows you to bypass the BS and start the movie right away...

Ofer,

The only thing I would like to conclude is that if it can be done in software, then lets hope it can be done in hardware, too. Also, the bookmarking feature worked when we ejected the DVD, and injected it again, IIRC.

I guess this post is more for the answering of those good folks at Immersive than anyone of us speculating--which is what I am trying not to do. Maybe someone from Immersive can answer this.

wanman,

Of course it *can* be done. As I said, there are some DVD transports that have this feature to a limited degree (disk memory, it's sometimes called).

The factor regarding whether or not it will be in the product depends on which DVD transport is selected.

I'm sure that this will not be the major factor in the decision regarding which transport is selected. The PQ aspect is much more important.

So, I think the correct terminology here is to *ask* if aSimilator has this feature, not *request* it.

Ofer, I wasn't requesting the feature be included, I was requesting/asking if anyone knew if Immersive ntended to include this feature or not. Sorry if you thought I was trying to make a feature requestion submission. If I were, it certainly wouldn't be on a non-Immersive discussion forum (I'd make the request directly to Immersive).

It cannot be done easily with the existing Panasonic transport. So, no we would not have book marking.

Tom, thank you for answering this question. Its really appreciated. Can I ask you one more (no, that wasn't the question):

On the latest version of TT, is the number of DVD bookmarks (assuming only one per DVD title), large?

You know, someone could have cleared this all up from the beginning and simply told me I was mistaken in that TheaterTek and Immersive are separate entities. :p

Ofer, if you want more reading on what I was looking for, look here . Everynoe else, sorry for wasting your time. My apologies.

TT will allow as many bookmarks per DVD as you want. There is also a special one for "start" of the DVD. The only limit would be the size of your hard drive I suppose. Additionally there is a "resume" where you left off feature.

Immersive has spoken about adding an MPEG daughtercard for the H3d and if they do this, then the Bookmarking features would be a possibility.

{EDIT for crazy idea}

Since there appears to be a version of aSimilator that does not include a DVD player and an external one can be used in either event, perhaps for certain situations, one could just plug the HTPC DVI out into the Asim DVI input. Unorthodox, but what the hey!
