I went looking for this on DVD. I brief search on IMDB only turned up a P&S crapola on Amazon. Does anyone know what the original aspect ratio for this movie was, and what ISBN numbers for whatever DVD publishings were made available. I do not want P&S, even if it means doing within this movie on DVD.

If you mean the original version from the 50's (a great Howard Hawks production - IMO) then it is 4:3 (Full Frame 1.33), not P&S. I recently saw this film again and I find it a very good production. Christian Nyby directed but it is rumored that Hawks did most of the direction. The pacing and dialog make it stand out from other fifties sci-fi fare.

I like it!

I thought the John Carpenter version just came out again: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=456634

DDD has it: http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.c...86&promotion=y

I just watched it last weekend.

Nice transfer, video very good, a bit grainy but clean. Audio ... well, it's mono, so it benefits from an interpolated surround setting ....

Yes, I do mean the original movie by Howard Hawks. Amazon is saying the aspect is pan and scam. I went over to DDD but they had not aspect information, which is why I posted. :)

EDIT: I watched it for the nth time last weekend on TCM. I've watched it enough times to pay for a hard copy.

I put the DDD link in as you counter-posted.

DDD says (and it is: )
  • Full Frame - 1.33

    Single Side - Dual Layer

BTW: on our 80" X1 4:3 screen the DVD looked very, very good. An enjoyable movie.

I'm talking about the DVD. I didn't know TCM ran it again.

Cyrano, thanks for the info. AcuraCL, TCM has played this movie on several occasions. Its probably the one SDTV channel I could live with and the one channel I'd love to see come to HD.

It's 1951, two years before CinemaScope. One can buy the 1:1.33 version with confidence.

...or on my Mit. 65711 screen, flip it to interlaced and watch it in the "EXPAND" mode.

It fills the screen and I'm happy. Who cares if I'm missing info on all four sides...IT FILLS THE SCREEN!!!"

Turnouts, facepiece, helmet and gloves are on...give it your best shot!!! :D

I was only kidding, it looks great on my 65 inch and watching it as a 1.33:1/1.37:1 image. Remember, it wasn't restored at all. I think they used the same print that was used on the LD but cleaned it up a little.

It should look great on your 100 incher!!! :D
