Q9FN 75 vs 77C1/G1

1568 Views 15 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Matt_84
So I currently have a Samsung Q9FN 75", and I am giving some serious consideration to buying a 77" C1/G1 on a whim today as they are on sale.

I've come here to either confirm or deny that this is a good idea.

All things considered, is it worth the upgrade?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

You're in the OLED forum, so most here will say "yes" (including me). You may get a different answer in the LCD forum.;)
Seriously, OLED has better blacks and contrast, wider viewing angles, and IMO better all-round PQ. Of course, the Samsung QLED (i.e., LCD) is brighter, which is an advantage in if most of your viewing is in a bright room.

I had the 75Q9FN. It was the closest lcd to oled I ever had. It came really close at times and had great saturation and blacks but still had some washy scenes and crush in others. I went to a 82Q90R which was a downgrade and I also have a C8 oled too but now have an 83A90J and the sony is the best of both worlds. Beautiful hdr with highlights that actually go brighter than Samsung TVs because Samsung has dim down algorithms to prevent blooming. The processing on the A90J is also a really big upgrade over older tvs now too. I'd hold off and wait for some deals on the 83A90J.

You said “most” here would go with OLED. hehe I think maybe “Everyone” would be more likely. The OLED’s even have 2 extra inches of screen size. Hehe

Thank you guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I am still pining over my old Samsung F8500 65" plasma. It was such a nicer TV to watch. I bought the QLED when the OLED's were extortionately expensive (for context, lets say $12K vs. the $7K I paid for the Samsung from memory)... now I am feeling like I am missing out on the experience of OLED. I'm secretly hoping the QLED dies and I can just get a refund, but sadly that is not happening.

I hear what you are saying and agree that the bigger screen size would be more a more logical upgrade, otherwise I am buying a new TV that will only be marginally bigger - your suggestion would make the most sense given it would be a noticeable difference in screen size. Realistically, I had not considered going over 1.8M in TV width though because the cabinet is 1.8M. Time to buy a new cabinet perhaps?
Ok, I just figured out that the legs can be mounted towards the centre on the 83A90J. Now I am excited.

For movies go with Sony, for gaming go with LG.

Thank you. No gaming here. Predominantly movies, TV shows, and sports.

I think you will be happy with any large OLED. Some people are super picky about every detail of their TV. Others actually use their TV‘s and enjoy them. Hehe. The owner forum for each model of TV usually has a large number of people who like their TV for most purposes. I think you should pick the TV you like based on design, smart hub, and different features that you will actually use. Then, enjoy your awesome TV.

Also, you mentioned the 83A90J. Just so you know, the professional testers have analyzed the A80J and the A90J and found them to be really similar. They do say the A90J performs slightly better (as expected) but that comes with a huge price increase. The 77A80J or 77C1 are excellent and already really big TV‘s...and they are what? Half the price of the A90J? If money is no object for you, then get the 83A90J. But you might want to consider one of the 77-inch models and then possibly you can invest in some good speakers, or whatever else someone wants to do with a few thousand extra dollars. You could save that extra money, and wait until you can add $2000 more and get something even better. Just something to consider.

What I mean by that last part, is if the 77a80j is $5K and the 83a90j is $10K, you save $5 if you get the a80j. In 2 years, $7K will possibly get you the A90J, Or, maybe a better TV.

I appreciate the feedback. The interesting thing is here in Australia, the 77A80J is $8K and the 83A90J is $10K. So the disparity is less. We just had a sale on the LG panels which dropped the price by 20% for a short period of time; this didn't apply to the 83" LG panels though. It took the 77C1 down to $5596 (from $6995) and the 77G1 down to $6396 (from $7995). I hope/expect the same retailers will include the Sony panels in a similar sale (20% off) in the future, bringing the 83A90J down $8K.

Otherwise, all my audio gear is pretty well sorted. But the micro-LED factor has me contemplating what the next few years could bring regarding TV tech.
You can get the 77C1 for $5500, and you want the A90J at that way higher price? Hmm, I would already have grabbed that C1 and not looked back. I think the C1 is a fantastic TV, and the G1 ignition be marginally better. Both are awesome, and way cheaper than both Sony’s (at this moment). You’re waiting for TV’s to drop in price that are basically the same quality as other TV’s that are already much cheaper.

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Ya, the pricing of the A80J and A90J are different compared to other areas. Certainly a hefty price for the A89J... possibly that’s a strategy to encourage more sales of the A90J. Better resolution and 6 more diagonal inches... it’s worth the $2000. Ironically, the original $8000 isn’t. Hehe

Where I am (China), the 83A90J is $10,500 AUD (incl. taxes) and the 77A80J is $5400 AUD to $6300 AUD, both including taxes, from an online retailer vs Sony Store, respectively.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, those discounts (the 20% sale) are issued by the retailers, but usually it is the brand that pays to cover the price drop. Therefore, LG issued the actual sale, so you will be hoping Sony does the same, not the retailers. I could be wrong, but I believe that’s how it works.

Glad your audio is set up the way you want it. Sounds like the only thing remaining is a TV.

Finally, yes, the development of micro-LED will be interesting, but hard to say how it will play out in terms of quality and price, Yet another reason to consider a significantly cheaper model.

Keep us posted on your decision. Look forward to hearing your verdict.

Coming from a brighter lcd, the upgrade is the 83A90J. The C1 is 2 or 3 steps down from the A90J. Same quality? I don't get why people can't just admit truths and instead have to twist reality to make themselves feel better lol

I mean, the current TV is not that bad to be fair 😂

You are correct. I agree that LG would have issued them. I am working on the assumption that Sony will do the same thing at some point; whether this is realistic is yet to be seen.

What did you have beforehand? I've already started my investigations into a 190cm cabinet.

Why was I twisting reality? I don’t have any affiliation or attachment to any of these TV’s. I have no bias. I love your concept of truth.... haha... you mean your opinion is the truth.

But hey, if you want to live vicariously through your TV model, go for it.

And I’ve read reviews on the different TVs. Cherry-picking an article to prove your point works both ways. I just don’t have interest in playing that game.

Enjoy your opinion.
Ok. I pulled the trigger on the 83" A90J. Will post some thoughts once it is setup tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's input.
