QAM Channels?

1356 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Morphyne
So I have an HTPC with two OTA/QAM tuners in them. I just got cable internet and phone. It is my assumption that if I plug in my HTPC to the cable I will get cable channels. Any idea of what kind?

Or will I get any at all because I a not paying for any kind of tv cable channels they put a filter on. Or will the QAM channels get through the filter?

Here in Milwaukee I do get my local stations this way. I would expect nothing more though since I am NOT paying for any other services. Can they lock me out with a filter? I dont know? I hope not...all I want is my local channels anyway.
I just want to know if I can get my local over cable which SHOULD be a little more reliable than my ota.

if they put on a filter you wont get any. you can try to hook the cable line up to your tv (if it has a digital tuner) to see what you get. if you get a bunch of cable channels you should get the same through the tuner card. If not OTA broadcast will get you all your locals in HD.

you will need to use win7 to get the qam though.

i have qam setup and i rarely watch anything but the network local HDs, i like a little better bad weather here affects the reception of my antenna.

If your digital tuner will receive either OTA 8vsb digital or cable QAM digitil then you should get a subset of the digital channels availale in your zip code OTA with an antenna via unencrypted (clear) QAM and with the minimum tv service.

However, If you are only receiving phone and internet from your cable company then all TV signals are most likely bering filtered out.

Actually your OTA channels are probably more reliable and you will receive more of them.

I suspect as much would be true. I wonder whatI would get if I got basic cable. It would be nice to slip a couple of non-locals in there.

if you got basic you'd get all the unencrypted QAM then. Youcan take your chance with Vista and TV pack, you'd i never got it working. Grab the win7 RC. and upgrade in the fall.
Basic most likely will not get you any non locals since cable compaies are only requied to provide one unencrypted digital TV sub channel from each local high powered brodcaster.

Some cable companies are still providing more but they most likely will not for much longer.

Also when I refer to basic cable I am referring to basic cable service that is less then $20 per month and not to what some cable companies call basic digital which costs a heck of a lot more.

Plug it in and find out? How is anyone supposed to know if your particular install technician did their job right?
I plugged it in to my tv and nothing. Plus, I watched the guy instal the filter

Any filter would be between the street and where the cable line comes into your home.

What Filter did you see the cable guy installl unless it was one to enable phone and internet to your system?
He just said it was a filter. Kind of looked like the PCV valve for my Ranger. Kinda big and silver. I was all over him during the install. The filter is out in the street.
Since he installed the filter at the street connection it is letting through the frequencies used by the Internet and phone connection and is blocking the frequencies used for TV.
what you should have done was asked him not to install the filter, offered him a beer and a nice tip
