QAM without basic cable?

3231 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  davehancock
Hello, looking to save $19 on (basic cable) free QAM. I get the internet and basic cable through Comcast. $ are very high for both. Can I drop the basic cable and still get the free QAM with just the internet connection? Or do you need to subscribe to the basic channels to get free QAM?

No. a cable internet connection has nothing to do with receiving TV programs over cable
I actually receive all my digital local channels just subscribing to the internet. I am also with comcast. It may not be the same everywhere though so it is worth a shot. There is also an analog trap on my line so I get none of the analog stations.

I thought I read that before. Thanks

You are lucky that your Comcast cable company is giving you free digital QAM channels without you paying for any cable TV service. They will probably retoify this mistake in their service offerings in the future.
I have Comcast cable, primarily because it's the only broadband internet provider I have access to. When I signed up, I could add the most basic TV for ten dollars a month, or pay a montly twelve dollar "fee". Obviously it was cheaper to get the TV channels (though I would probably receive them either way).

It depends on their procedures and QAM ch assignments. If they don't put a filter on the line when you drop cable TV or the QAM chs are around the same freq/ch used for Internet you'll keep getting the QAM chs.

The legality of all that is another matter....
Comcast charges $15 extra for Internet access if you don't take cable. And since basic cable is typically around $15...it doesn't really matter. You pay for it either way.
But, if you only are being billed for Internet, tapping off video that you are not being billed for is "theft of service". They could prosecute you for that!
