Will I notice significant improvements in quality if I get a VGA cable and use it so I can upscale my dvd's from 480 to 720? I have a Native 720p Sammy Plasma. Thanks for answering my noob questions!!!

MOST definitely.

I myself bought the oppo 971H to upscale dvd's just a few days after i recieved my 360 and AE900.I remember thinking that it was a shame the 360 did not upscale SD-DVD's cause if it did i wouldnt have bought the Oppo.

Buying the VGA cable is a sweet deal as a upscaling upgrade option imo.

There is a difference. On some DVDs more then others.

I just finished comparing the scaler in the 360 vs. the scaler in my TV (Samsung 6187). The TV did an O.K. job but 360 won. And there was a pretty big difference between the two.

In case your wondering I used the DTS, special edition whatever version of Gladiator mostly. With a little bit of Unbreakable and Kill Bill vol. 1.

Sadly I don't have an upconverting DVD player to compare the 360 to. So it was the PS3 (HDMI) vs. regular DVD player (component) vs. 360 (VGA).

Now that I think about it. I should have thrown Sin City in there also. I've not seen that in a while.

Andreo reminds me that i did forget to mention that it truely and ultimately depends on you're displays scaler ofcourse. But it is true for as far as i have heard that the 360 scaler easily matches the quality of the Oppo player. Most displays will not match that unless you have say like a pioneer elite model maybe.

It depends on how your Sammy deals with VGA. If like one of my plasma's that is looking for a computer VGA levels, it was washed out and not very vibrant at all. Sharp picture, but color sucked. That plasma didn't have the settings I needed to change the colors. My older plasma accepted video levels on the VGA and it looks GREAT. So that is where it goes. However, I'm not running native resolution and using 720p (1280x720) so it scales and overscans. Still, it looks very nice. I had connected the VGA to my 1366x768 LCD TV and it also looked 'washed out' and I couldn't adjust the colors without affected my other settings (cheap LCD TV).

So the consensus is that the 360 provides about the same quality of scaling as a run of the mill upconverting player? I own a samsung upconverting player that upconverts via HDMI and component. But having the option to just use my 360 to replace that player would be nice as I can eliminate another device from my a/v setup.

I haven't done that much testing yet, But I didn't care for the vga with my Sony 50a10 which is a fairly decent tv IMO.

I didn't care for it Firstly becasue there's next to zero options to calibrate the the picture settings, which I found to be washed out. I think it's weird that I can't do anything with the picture except some basic options with vga. I mean c'mon even my old CRT monitor has color options

I still have the cables, so I'm going to test some more at some point. It was pretty much immdiatly put back to component in my house as it quickly appearent that, I personally, didn't care for the PQ.

I'm more than happy with my upconverting dvd player for SD dvd's for now. Would I like to get rid of it? hell yes I would

I echo the washed out colors phenomenon on my Sammy 4095. I ran the THX optimizer and it improved the image quite a bit, but there is still a huge "red push" in color. But I do agree that the upscale quality looks a little better from the 360, despite the color issue.
