Hello All,

I am looking to purchase a pair of tower speakers on a limited budge.

Details:
  1. Receiver: Denon AVR 3803
  2. HT/Music: 50/50 (jazz, rock, some electronic)
  3. Room size: 15'x20'
  4. Amp: No
  5. Sub: None at the moment. Will purchase later.
  6. Budget: $600 max on main fronts

I am considering the following speakers, but I have not been able to find many reviews or customer input on some of them.

- Option 1: Cambridge Audio S70

They usually retail for $500/pair. I have heard good things about their S30 bookshelf which I have also heard them myself. I liked the S30 sound, but I felt I needed something bigger to fill my room so I thought the S70 would do the trick. Some S70 owners have commented that they have heard them "resonate" with more bass loaded tracks. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a local dealer to audition them.

- Option 2: Mordaunt-Short Carnival 8

I have seen even less reviews of this speaker, but Mordaunt has the same parent company as Cambridge Audio. The Carnival 8 seems to be the Mordaunt counter part to the S70, but with a heavier cabinet and bigger woofers. On paper, they are about the same so I assume they will have a similar sound. Perhaps these slightly heavier cabinet eliminate the resonance problem some S70 owners have complained about?

- Option 3: ARX A3

I have read good things about this speaker in the Owner's Thread, but it is usually dead around there. However, they seem to have satisfied customers.

- Option 4: EMP Tek E5Ti

Quite a bit of glowing reviews found here and Auidoholics award. However, my main concern is driving these speakers since they are less sensitive at 87dB and 6 ohms. Any thoughts if this will be a major con? I am not planning on adding an amp to my setup.

- Option 5: KEF iQ70

I have read not so great reviews on these speakers, but people keep recommending them. It seems that they need a proper break in before they can be judged properly. I will have to go to my local Fry's to take a listen.

_______________

If any one that has compared these speakers or have some input, please comment. Any other suggestions are welcomed.

I am considering purchasing only the the fronts and their matching center speaker so there will be no sub for a month or two. I will be saving up for a good sub at a later date.

Thanks!

The Arx seem to have very good responce on reviews as mentioned but as most.. I have not herd them so to comment on those I cant.

Just an option to look into are...

Bic Pl-89's
http://www.sounddistributors.com/buy...stech+Speakers

* can be had for around $480 or so with shipping ( make an offer option)

I have the Pl-76's as they ave a great acoustech sound! The pl-89's and an 8" driver vs the 6.5 as I have.

It seems like the PSB Image T6's are 600 each. I think the op is looking for 600/pair.

Yes. I should have stated that.

Budget: $600/Pair.

I was also considering them, but I was unsure about the horn tweeter. I am afraid that I may become fatigued during long listening sessions. I will have to locate a comparable Klipsch speaker to find out.

Don't base a BIC PL on listening to a Klipsch Synergy, find something higher up.

Of those though...I pick the Mordaunt. You might try to find some "open box"/used Dali Concept.

$600 will do very well if you look at the used speaker market. Best to find a local seller to avoid shipping and allow for demo/inspection.

Live near Sacramento, CA or Reno, NV? Theses are new, with warranty Dali Concept 8 from a dealer you could probably get for $600.

Near Philadelphia? A $600 offer may get these Paradigm Studio 100s .

Look around to see what's available in your area.

Would the Reference Klipsch line be a comparable speaker to the PL-89?

Why do you pick Mordaunt?

Unfortunately, there aren't many speakers selling around here, but I'll keep checking. Those Dali Concept 8s look really nice.

I live outside of Philly and just saw that listing today. I think $700 is high for V.1's, but $600 sounds alright. I may have to look into this.

You're right. I wasn't sure of the version. $500 may be about right for V1.

If I could get him down to five I could get them tomorrow. The only thing that could be an issue is finding a matching center.

Finding a matching center is a non-issue. I purchased a used pair of Studio 60 V2 not too long ago and matching center speakers were easily available. Lots of Paradigm speakers out there.

Contact the seller and ask for an audition. Take $500 (max) with you.

Sounds good, it will probably be a few months until I can get money together for the center anyway.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac...532555159.html (of course two more would take a while)

Those are all TODAY, and not even all...

Crap. I completely forgot about Craigslist for some reason.
