Question 1080P

919 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Shin CZ
Would I get a benefit if i set my Toshiba 32" 32HL67U to 1080p? Or would it just down-convert back to 720P and lower the picture quality? I am going to sit pretty close to the TV, around 3-6 feet away depending on where I want to sit.

If your TV will do 1080p it wont be down converting, itll be upconverting everything to 1080p except HD dvd and blu ray which is native 1080p.

Would I get a better picture once it's upscaled to 1080p?

I recently purchased a Samsung 1080p upconvert DVD system, Does my TV have to be 1920 x1080 native to display 1080p? Thanks!
Sorry lol, their two separate questions.
It looks like your TV is 720p native. Im no expert but i believe that if your dvd player is upconverting to 1080p your TV is going to be converting it back to 720p.
Alright so my real question is will I get a better picture from 720p or 1080p at a screen resolution of 1366 x 768?

Use the same resolution as the source.

If you have to pick just one setting, use 1080p (or 1080i if 1080p is not available). Downresing everything to 720p just to upscale to your native resolution will reduce quality significantly.
For DVD, you might well be best at 480p! So that there is only one scaling operation to the native res of your display. Just experiment and choose what looks best to you, only way to tell for sure. Upconverting is often a waste, esp. on a 768 display where the player won't output at that res & the set won't accept that res, I usu recommend just using old player until ready for Blu-ray upgrade. (For Blu-ray use 1080p, of course).
If you can 'force' a 1080p resolution on your set, do that, as it'll only be downscaling to 1366x768. 720p has to UPSCALE from 1280x720, which degrades PQ just a little bit. It's just like watching a 1080i broadcast vs. a 720p broadcast. 1080i will undoubtedly look more detailed, though 720p has better motion because it's progressive.
