Question about 1080i source on 720p native plasma...

Hi all

First off i'm new to all the HDTV stuff I recently bought me a 50" plasma set, on it's specs it says it supports the following modes :

640 x 480i - 1Fh, 640 x 480p - 2Fh, 720 x 576i - 1Fh, 720 x 576p - 2Fh, 1280 x 720p - 3Fh, 1920 x 1080i - 2Fh, 1920 x 1152i bij 50 Hz - 2Fh

it's native resolution is : 1366 x 768 , so i guess i should consider it a native 720p plasma ?

Well, over here we don't have any HD programming yet (and not anywhere soon), but i'm planning to buy a Xbox360 which will be able to play HD streams through mediacenter.

Now i'm wondering what will happen if i play 1080i media on my plasma ? It supports it but i guess there will be some downgrading in the resolution ? Will it still be "pretty" ? or will it look quite bad ? (most HD videos i can download are 1080i ...)

Would a 720p video look better then a 1080i video (which would be rescaled) on my 720p native plasma ?

At this time, as far as I know, all plasmas are 720 or 768. They are specifically designed to display 1080i signals as well as the other formats. Personally, I think that 1080i broadcasts look a little better on these plasmas than 720p. Go figure. Anyway, don't worry about it, the XBox 360 should look spectacular.

(A 720p native display would be 1280X720.) Here are the two HD format resolutions , including limiting resolutions, detailed within sublinks. Since 1366X768 covers much of the resolvable detail within 1080i programming, it's not surprising such displays would provide better PQ from 1080i than 720p. The quality of the deinterlace/scaling circuits/algorithms, of course, is important. -- John
Since the input selections as you listed do not include 1368x768 but do include 1280x720, you can think of it as 720p native. Too bad it doesn't accept 1024x768 because that is a popular computer resolution and also a resolution that goes on the screen excellently.

The resolution of 1080i on your 720p or 768p TV is a big unknown these days although it would probably be at least 540 lines of resolution vertically and close to the screen resolution horizontally. On average the de-interlacing (de-interlacing is needed) done by the TV is fair to poor on 2005 and earlier models.

Compared with standard definition shows you will still get a spectacular picture.

You can get a dongle to connect between a set top box tuner and the TV that will give you nearly the full vertical resolution of your TV if you find that your TV does not measure up and you want to do something about it later. (The lowest price one I know, the Lumagen HDP, costs $1500., requires 1024p or 1080p input on 1024p and 1080p panels)

It depends on how good the deinterlacer and scaler in your plasma are. If they are good, then 1080i material will have an edge over 720p material. If they are bad, then the 720p material will likely look better.

What brand and model of plasma display did you buy?
1080i looks better on my Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK than 720p, especially coming from my Bell ExpressVu satellite receiver to the display via the DVI output.
Well it's a Philips 50pf9966/10 , i now audio/video-philes don't really like Philips Plasma's thou... :) So i don't know how good it's scaling /interlacing algorithems are. Ah well, i'm satisfied with it at the moment and i'll see what happens when i connect a xbox360 :)

Thx for all the replies :)

I feed 1080i to my Panny. It looks better than feeding it 720P even when the broadcast is 720p.
