i am thinking about getting a samsung dlp.....i have heard great things xbox and pc gaming....my concern is about the lack of 720p mode....

what happens when you put in a game that is supposed to run in 720p....will the tv downconvert to 480p or upconvert to 1080i

how big a deal will it be not to have 720p....

should i just go with a panny lcd (which has all the modes)

The Sammy DLP has all modes: 480i/480p 720p and 1080i

You can set the modes independantly in the XBOX dashboard. IOW, you can turn on 480p and 1080i, but leave 720p off. That being said, there are only a handful of games that support 720p--nearly all are 480p.

I have the Samsung 56 DLP and the XBox dashboard is presented in 480 and will not display in the 720 mode. But if the game, i.e. Soul Caliber and Tony Hawk, are in 720, a picture will eventually show. But you must use component 2 or 3.

No, it supports 1080i by down converting it. It is a native 1280x720 and 720p is arguably better than 1080i anyways. Newer projectors will be in 1980x1080 and will support 1080p.

There are only a handful of 720p X-box games (3...?), everything else will run at 480p.

I have the Samsung 50 DLP and it is GREAT to play HD games on! I have both the PS2 and Xbox and TOTALLY recommend the tv for gaming(and everything else).

WSB 2k3 is 720p and it looks AMAZING!!! I can't wait for this years version!

The only down side is the Xbox/PS2 dashboards will not display in the comp 2 and comp 3 inputs, but that is easily remedied by getting the "4 to 2 Component Video Matrix switch".

Put 4 game consoles in and the with the 2 outputs run 1 to the 720p input and the other to the 480i input. You can switch back and forth with the remote when you wanna see the dashboards...Which should only be when you wanna do memory management or mp3 list(Xbox). And if you have a remote like the MX-500(or something) use a macro to switch your HT components and you won't even know the video switch is there.

The only 720p game I felt worth playing and showed some difference is Freedom Force. SC is another but they crop it to a not true 720p output, so I didn't care for it in 720p. Your milage may vary though. Also alot of the 720p and 1080i games don't look better than the best 480p games like Halo, Price of Persia. Maybe its harder for the companies to program games in that high resolution who knows. But I still take the best 480p games visually over the current 720p and 1080i games. I also still think Enter the Matrix is just a 480 upconverted 1080i signal .

I haven't been into sports games, lately but might pick up a Fifa or soccer game any soccer games have good 720p or 1080i support?

I don't know how I got by this long in life without my Sam 56.

The PS2 looks terrible. I can barely bring myself to destroying people in Madden anymore. I guess I'll just settle for 2K4.

So, my phillips HDTV supports 480p and 1080i -- If I turn off 720p in the xbox dashboard will it still try to convert to 1080? Should I leave all 3 settings turned on or is there a disadvantage to doing so?

well you can test it maybe it will upconvert it most likely default to 480p,my tv does all resolutions so I not sure I think it won't display right but won't mess up your tv or anything. I can get Enter the matrix to goto 720p by turning off 1080i although there is not much difference in the two.

No, the XBox won't upconvert 720p for your set. It simply uses the highest resolution that you've told it is available in the dashboard.

I believe I have a similar set as Hagfish, a Philips that only does 480p and 1080i. If I turn OFF everything EXCEPT 1080i on the dashboard, will a 720p game upconvert to 1080i?

Nope, I've tried this and it didn't work.. I only have one game that supports 720p -- freedom fighters. Although my TV supposedly doesn't support 720p, the game actually works in full widescreen HD. I guess the TV is smart enough to take the 720 and convert it to 1080 without the xbox knowing any different.. FYI, I have all settings set to "Yes" 480, 720, and 1080
