I'm trying to figure out how I should go about using OC 703 as treatment on my HT ceiling. I'm not positive I understand the theory behind the placement of each 2' x 4' pannel (hence, I'm asking the question). When I place the 703 on the ceiling, should I cover the entire ceiling (which leads to being totally dead), only at the axial nodes, at the reflecting points, or something else? Any and all input appreciated.

Also, should 1" of 703 be enough for the ceiling, or should I go with 2"? I'm planning on using 4" in the corners for bass and likely 2" on the walls at the reflecting points. Thanks!

e,

Treating the ceiling with the products you described will not address the modal problems you're asking about. Placement of ceiling treatment for the purposes of absorbing early (mid/high) reflections is common. Typically, the minimum coverage you can get away with is an area of coverage roughly halfway between your main seating area and the loudspeakers. More technically, you can use the "mirror trick" to place the panels. Here's one place it's described: http://www.acoustisoft.com/mirrortrick.html.

If you are more concerned with low frequency problems and the ceiling, then you probably want an area of beefier absorption directly above the seating area. (The 1" or 2" 700-series OC won't cut it...unless you include some layering and spacing...but then you could be cutting into ceiling height...)

One thing I tend to tell people NOT to do is absorb the entire ceiling.

Does this at least start to help?

Yes, that does help. Placement of ceiling treatment for the purposes of absorbing early (mid/high) reflections is common. That is what I am going for with the treatment. That said, should I use 1" or 2" OC 703 if I'm trying to absorb mid & high reflections? Of course 1" is cheaper, but if I need to use 2" for a noticable difference, I'm will to do that.
