Question about BD\HDDVD companies

900 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  fa8362
Does the actual company(reputation ,track record, etc.) affect your decisions?

Does it affect avg non AVS consumer more than us AV folk?

Would BD have already won, if someone other than Sony was a big player?

Perfect example about me was how much I dislike Sony. Stupid things they say, product decisions, etc.

My fav quote from sony was "The next generation does not start until we say it does"(paraphrase, something to that effect)

Beta,Mini,now umd biting it?

How about Microsoft? They are very good about ticking people off, maybe not as good as sony LOL

1) It affects nearly everyone's decisions

2) To some extent, yes, because the broader population understands technology, specs, and performance less than the average AVS person

3) No, despite what you might think, Sony is a highly respected brand in the aggregate...and virtually everyone in the developed world knows the name

4) Microsoft is hated by many folks, but I have no idea how large that group is.
This my own humble opinion and experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

I've been a Sony fan most of my life. Almost all of my family's TVs are Sony, dating all the way back to a ~14" Trinitron in the early '80s. My current TV is a Sony GWIII. I had a PS1 and I still have my PS2. And so forth.

Unfortunately, recent events (some public, some private) have severely damaged my impression of the company. Rootkit, to me, was no joke. It didn't affect me directly, but it was very disappointing nonetheless. And I've had some personal experiences with Sony that I will not discuss on a public forum. The bottom line is, Sony has alienated me with their actions.

This is at least part of the reason that my Sony TV spends most of its time displaying games and movies from a 360 w/add-on. It is also part of the reason that I don't own a PSP and have no plans to buy a PS3 in the near future. It's not the WHOLE reason, I'm not that irrational. But it certainly plays its role.

Again, this is just my story, YMMV.

I guess first to answer your question...YES...

...and secondly, when the war in this thread starts, maybe we could keep it on a lighter tone???

While I dont mean to start a war, I just like to ponder what life would be like for these formats, if it was not Sony vs MS

I agree, I made an effort to be diplomatic in explaining my personal bias. It would probably be far more constructive if people didn't resort to fanatical mudslinging.

Well, let's be honest. Microsoft is not without its own flaws and PR hiccups. But I've also been an MS fan my whole life (all the way back to MS-DOS on my IBM PC Jr). Although they've certainly annoyed me at times over the years, they've never done anything that left as bad a taste in my mouth as Sony has the past few years.

I again stress that this is merely my own perspective, I'm sure there are plenty of people who have their own legitimate reasons to dislike MS and embrace Sony.

Personally, I don't see why things would be much different. I hate Microsoft (because I've used and hated most of their software), but that wouldn't have stopped me from buying an HD-DVD player. I've had good experiences with most Sony products, so I bought a BDP-S1. I couldn't care less about Betamax, or that Sony and/or its ad agency made up movie review quotes.
