Question about digital cable setup

371 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  tvtech1
I need some help determining the best way to get a digital signal from one side of the room to the other. I have two HDTV receivers that both output Dolby Digital via optical and coaxial. For maximum video performance, I have these units placed next to my RPTV.

My rack with the A/V receiver that decodes the signal is a 50' cable length away (ran in PVC conduit in the wall/ceiling) I originally set up a length of diy Belden 1695a cable for the digital signal, using a Theta TLC for a switching device, but feel the signal is suffering from jitter or signal loss. I get excellent decoding from my DVD player, which is located in the rack. The 1695a is now being used as a composite video cable, working fine.

So what do I need? I have an extra AES/EBU cable installed; (Belden 89207) was told it could be used for digital. Should I use it along with a couple of converters (Monarchy)? Or some optical cables with repeaters? I don't always use surround sound from the HDTV units, so don't want to move them closer and have the video signal suffer.

thanks

How does the jitter manifest itself?

I doubt you have signal loss, as it's a digital signal, if the level is below the detection threshold, then there is effectively no signal, therefore no sound.

the coax cable should work fine.

If you're interested, I am running SPDIF through about 150' of sheilded twisted pair. I am using a 75176 TTL to RS422 convertor at each end of the cable, these are only about $2.00 per chip. RS422 is good for up to 4000' and up to 10Mb/s.

Here is the Belden 89207, similar to yours? http://www.takefiveaudio.com/belden_89207.htm

How does the jitter....? I have a loss of clarity and seperation between channels. The HD receivers are Motorola 6200 cable box and a Zenith HDV420 OTA receive.
I'm using Belden 1800B, 110 Ohm digital audio cable. It's a lot cheaper then the stuff you linked to.

How about the converter you referred to... is this a diy or manufactured unit and can you send me a link to check it out?

Thanks
