Hello guys I have a quick question and I hope that someone can point me in the right direction.

I decided recently to build a subwoofer for my home theater. After shopping around for some off the shelf units I decided my plan of attack.

Originally I was going to replicate the klipsch sub-10 by using scratch and dent parts off of ebay. I got the sub-10 amplifier unit (after reading more after my impulse buy I started to think i should have gone a different route due to some "bad amplifier" reviews)

I also ordered the Sub-10 driver, and this is where everything went wacky. The ebay seller that i bought from sent me a driver from a different klipsch subwoofer all together, and ontop of all that the voice coil had some problems (ahem...blown). The seller didn't have anymore sub-10's so she said she could send me something else from her store. So I picked out a definitive technologies driver.

Here is my problem after doing research on the internet I can not dredge up what model the driver came out of so I have no idea what the specs are.

My box is roughly the size of the sub-10 box (i can put dims up when I get home.)

Right now I have the box sealed and I am not sure how I should go about porting it since I dont know the driver specs. (It sounds ok the way it is but I think it can be better.) Is there a good general place to start with my porting as far as the size goes?

I salute and thank anyone who has actually made it through my rambling, horrible spelling and grammar, and appreciate any help I can get.

Better off staying with a sealed sub. But if you insist on a port, go to parts express.com and fine the precsion flaired ports there should be a page to input driver size, box size to decide port size and length.

Thank you I will take that into consideration. I could not find the calculator on parts express, however i did find one somewhere else online but it is kind of tough not knowing the drivers xmax or any other parameters.

If you wanna mess around and learn in the process, you could simply route a hole in the enclosure and insert different length PVC pipe based on tunings to volume and see which works best. Not a lot of cost but costly on time and effort. Ican help with some suggested sampling lenghts but i'll need to know the net volume of the enclosure. A single length of 3" pvc for about $10 is all you should need. Once you've found the sweet spot, simply replace it with a 3" precison port kit from PE.

Based on the dimensions of the Sub-10, assuming .75" material, and giving a bit back for bracing/driver/port, I would say you have about 1.5 ft3 to work with. A 3"x15" port would tune the box to 27hz. It's impossible to know if the woofer you have would work in that alignment.

I would recommend selling your woofer and purchasing this 10" Quatro which will work in that alignment.

This is exactly what I was thinking about doing. I guess if i decide that the port is not going to work I can always put some mdf back over the hole and seal it and pretend it was always supposed to be that way.

I will keep you guys posted. I haven't been on the website here for quite a while i forgot how great and fast the replies are.

Thanks

Oh and by the way for the money that I spent on the woofer (actually the 2 woofers) I don't know if I could get a whole lot better. The one that I have seems to be pretty high quality. I will try to get some pictures up sometime in the near future...not that they will help with my current delima lol.

It's not really about the perceived quality of your woofers, it's about extracting the performance you desire from them. They very well may work in that sized box, with a 27hz tune (as low as you can realistically go), or they may not be suited at all.

The 10" Quatro will work perfectly in that box, with those port dimensions, and the amplifier power you have, making it a sure thing.

You still didn't post the net volume of the box? Can't do much without it!
