Hello--

If I want to distribute DSS to more than 8 locations, do I have any options besides using a 5x12 or 5x16 multiswitch? If I buy a 5x8 multiswitch (e.g., Terk), can I then add a second (or third) multiswitch in line after that to expand the system (similar to adding a network hub after a router)? It is my understanding that this isn't possible, but I'm trying to find a way to distribute the signal to many different locations without having to pay $500+ for a Spaun multiswitch. Any feedback would be appreciated.

If it matters: I will be moving into a new home (new construction) next spring. I will be transferring my D* service to the new house, so I'll be getting a new dish. I'm assuming that I will be sent one of the new integrated HD dishes (I currently have an older HD dish with the 4x4 multiswitch attached to the back of the dish). I'm not clear on how to cascade, what the rules are about distributing the signal, etc.

Thanks in advance,

jj

You would have to use a satellite splitter to send the feed to different 5x 8 multi switches. You could also " stack " the signal and this may be economical in your case. I do not keep abreast of this market but I believe there are 16 output stackers. Otherwise you will need to spend the money on a Spaun and cascade from multi-switch to multi-switch.

But this is where centralized distribution can come in very handy. Route say, 8 IRDs to 16 TVs. This works because how often will you need to watch 16 different programs at the same time. Instead of locating an IRD at each TV you use matrix switchers. If you include other products like DVRs and high Def Tuners this can be a very useful way to distribute video throughout a house.

If you want to distribute HD through the multi-switch, make sure the multi-switch will pass ALL the HD channels. The Spauns will. Terks and Hollands and many others won't (though you'd never have the slightest clue from the literature and even their tech support usually don't know anything about it).
