Hello,

I recently acquired a Yamaha RX-A870 receiver and am currently redoing my family room with this receiver as the heart. I want to be able to play sources through my TV, in some cases, with surround sound, and in others without. This receiver has Standby Pass Through.

Am I correct in understanding that if I plug in my 4K Firestick into the receiver and connect my Xbox, Blu Ray player and Cable box via HDMI to the receiver, and then just have a single HDMI going to the TV, not only can I have these all play in HD/4K on the TV as well as surround sound (typical HDMI switching, which I'm familiar with), but it can also do the same with the receiver off and just using the speakers from the TV?

If so, that would be awesome. I've been looking for an easy way to get all of my sources to be able to play in surround/not surround without going through hoops with optical cables.

However, one question I have, how does the receiver know which signal to pass through if its off/on standby? Is it similar technology like the latest "activity/item that's on" is what will display?

Sorry if my questions don't make 100%, but this is an exciting possibility!
