Question about Pioneer Kuro 5080HD

1958 Views 11 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Mean
Hi Guys:

I am seriously considering Pioneer Kuro 5080HD because it is on sale at BestBuy, so I went there to see the how good the PQ is. Before going to Bestbuy, I have read lots of positive review about this Plasma TV, however, when I got there and saw the TV, I was kinda disappointed because it was not that bright compared to Samsung 120 mhz TV. So I asked somebody to calibrate the contrast, and the brightness for me, but still not comparable to the Samsung model. Samsung is much more brighter than pioneer.

My question is there anything wrong with the Pioneer TV or it's just the something wrong with Bestbuy's calibration? I am also considering SONY XBR4, will this model comparable to 5080HD because the picture on Sony looks amazing too.

Let me know what you guys think, thanks.

No there is nothing wrong. It looks dim because the picture is much more natural. You may admire a brighter picture setting than most people, which may be common to most people. The brighter screen appears to give the picture more "POP". At the end of the day, the 5080HD is among the best 50" displays. However, if you think the 5084 or 5884 is much better I would consider them as well.

there is something wrong with your perception of good PQ. No offence, but the samsungs and sonys are both unnaturally bright, and will force you to turn them down once you get back home. They cause a lot of eye strain. Plasmas are more life-like, but on BBs showroom the pictures with "POP" stand out to people that are new to HDTVs. It is sad that inferior technologys seem good

In the store, under all the fluorescent lighting, the brightest TV always looks the best. In your home, most people don't need anything that bright. At home, most people turn down the brightness on their LCDs.
I liked the Samsung 5271. It was definitely brighter (as many LCDs are) and still had a decent picture overall. If you do viewing in a bright room or use it for computer/console use, it is a very good choice. The XBR4 is similar to the 5271 and also decent all around. All depends on your preferences.
thank you for your contribution now I decide to get the Pioneer TV.

One more question, my car is hatchback and I guess I can fit the TV into my car( box included) but I heard we cant lay down the plasma or it will broken, is that true?

Since the distance from bestbuy to my home is about 5 miles, should I take the risk or just ask them to deliver?
borrow a truck and sit with the kuro just to be safe
One thing to keep in mind also is that BB's video sources aren't the best in the world, and unless they have the panel hooked up to a dedicated machine the picture is probably not going to be the best.

For instance, in my local BB, they have a 5080 on the wall along with the other flat panels and the video loop is so degraded that it doesn't look very good at all, compared to a Panny 50PZ700U that is in their living room mock-up with a dedicated Blu-ray player.
In your house the Kuro brightness should be more than fine. You'd be surprised just how bright those showrooms are.
Congrats..

I just fired my new one up a hour ago. Sweetness!

it should be ok but yes there is just a greater risk of the glass breaking when laid down flat and transported.

it's not recommended but happens all the time, people will tell you they transported them a hundred miles or more flat and all was ok. then again another mentioned going over a speed bump in the bb parking lot and got home 2 miles and the glass was cracked. if bb sees you load it flat they can say it's on your dime/risk and not allow a return for a glass breakage problem. ask them to deliver or rent a truck or find a relative or friend with a truck/van to get it home the safest way.....upright.
I like LCDs only because they tend to use about 1/2 the power, especially when calibrated, and because they can be had with matte screens. I love the 5080 but I think even it is too reflective for my room. The XBR4 can be set up very well and is as matte as can be such that you can have a desk lamp directly opposite the screen and not be bothered too much. The motion stuff for me is the most bothersome issue and the LCDs are starting to make this better but not up to the plasma's capability. I do like that new BB price for the 5080 though...hmmmm

I could just turn off the lights but the wife likes to do puzzles while we watch things so I am stuck. Not worth a divorce.
