question about resolution and DVDs

523 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  [email protected]
To watch 100% dvds how much of a reason is there to get a projector that can display more than 800x600?

I use an HTPC with to play my movies so I guess their resolution can be scaled higher but is it worth it? All I want to do is watch DVDs through my computer, no HDTV no SDTV.

So would it be wise to purchase say an HS20 and scale them up or would I be better off saving some $$ and sticking with 800x600?

How about a 1.78 PJ with 480 high resolution? Perfect for region 1 DVD. You could do a 1:1 pixel map with your HTPC and get some real nice results and avoid scaling issues.

LCD - Epson Home 10

DLP - InFocus Screenplay 4805
err yes..

that is what i mean. I would get a 16x9 projector and do the 1:1 pixel mapping.

my question is the benifit of scaling DVDs to a higher resolution comparable to watching a signal in HD? or am I just going to get a small boost.

To show you where I am coming from the first projector I saw was an HS20 with playing an HD tv signal. It was beautiful. Could regular dvds look that good?

Not really. Can come close with well mastered DVD. The detail is just not there as with true HDTV broadcasts. However, for really big projected images it helps. I do a 12 ft wide screen and it helps with that. I don't have HTPC but rather a Epson TW100 with a Bravo D1 which upscales to 720p and I use DVI.

Given the facts that ...

1) you already have HTPC and can upscale DVD

2) 720p pj projector prices are falling with the introduction of so many new models.

I'd get the HS20 or equiv. You may want HDTV in the future and better to upscale DVD than to downscale HDTV.

If I were you I would not go any lower than HD (1280x720). The reason for this is cause oyu will be watching DVD only. In 5 or so years when the HD- DVD's start to come out you will already have an HD projector that is ready for the job.
I had an 800 x 600 projector for 3 weeks before making the jump to a 720p projector. My viewing was almost exclusively DVDs so I thought that the 800 x 600 would be perfectly sufficient but I was bothered at how background images seemed to lack detail. Given the bigger pixel structure and actual gap between those pixels, I find the 720p projector to be head and shoulders above the lower res projector for both detail and colour saturation.

I recommend you step up to a 720p projector if you can afford it.

what model did you purchase for both the 800x600 and 720p?

mad
I first purchased a Benq 6100, then the Epson Home 10 and now own an Epson Cinema 200.
