this is probably a stupid question but, i have three center channel speakers that i want to use for the surround. Will this work? thanks in advise guys.

Yes, they should work fine. In fact, some high end installation experts recommend using the same speaker for mains and surrounds to maintain the same audio 'character' for all locations.

i don't mean to hijack the thread but I was about to ask the same question (i think) and rather not make a whole new thread......my question is there a big difference between the front side speakers and the back surround speakers? Or can I just buy, say 4 of the same (eg. im thinking Polk bookshelf speakers) and just put two up front and use two for surround?

Just asking because looking at prices, they do differ, for example Polk bookshelfs are 319 a pair but the matching surrounds are 419 a pair..
