If I play a standard DVD in a Blu-ray player can the video and audio signal be carried thru the HDMI cable? I'm running cable for future setup and would much prefer to just have that single skinny HDMI than the fat components and audio rca's to boot.

Yes, HDMI will carry it all, including SD DVD info.

Actually, HDMI is preferred since it can only upscale commercial SD DVDs over HDMI (not over component).

However, be aware that not all HDMI receivers will convert component and lower sources to HDMI. It's something you may want to consider in case you're thinking of connecting something that doesn't use HDMI.
