The phone line connected to the current STBs is for ordering Pay per view with the remote. It dials in once a day and reports purchases. Software & schedule updates come via the dish. I believe you will be able to sign up for Satellite service, but will need to call to order PPV.

Also, if you are going to have multiple STB's, you are "required" to have them all connected to the same phone line, so that DirecTV can verify that they are all in the same residence, and only charge you 4.99 for the additional receivers. Whether they actually check that, who knows.

Dishnetwork doesn't require a phone line but then you can't make impulse PPV purchases with the remote. It was my understanding that DirecTv required a phone line to work at all. Am I wrong on that?

I do not have a "land" telephone line in my house. I have been using broadband and my PCS for all my calling needs. Is there a system that will let me connect to my LAN to access the updates it requires?
