Question for DST-3000 users

312 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  JasonATL
I have a Toshiba 16:9 HDTV and I'm thinking about picking up one of these Toshiba STBs since my local network channels are about to begin HD broadcasts. I plan to use an OTA antenna for local stations in HD (I'm close to the transmitters) and continue to use my cable TV service (non-HD) for the remainder of my TV viewing. I have no desire to hook up a satellite dish or receive satellite TV service. My questions about the DST-3000 are these:

1. Can I hook my OTA antenna to the STB's "In From Antenna" F-type jack and also hook my cable TV line to the "Satellite In" F-type jack?

2. Does the DST-3000 really convert all signals to 1080i? That is, if I hook the STB's component video outs to the HD (Colorstream) video ins on the TV, will I get noticeable improvement in video from my standard, analog cable channels?

Any assistance appreciated from Forum members.

Hello,

Yes you can hookup local and cable as you have described.

It is necessary to assign the inputs in the installation menu.

As long as your Toshiba set is not more than a couple of years old it should accept yhe 1080i and produce an inproved cable picture.

The first and second? generation of the 65" and 56" Toshiba 16/9 sets had component video but did not accept 1080i.

Hope this helps.

According to my DST-3000 manual, yes. There are two inputs. Either can be used for OTA or cable TV reception (or one can also have a satellite input).

Yes, sort of. Everything output through the component outputs of the DST-3000 are upconverted to 1080i. You can get 480i through the s-video and composite outputs. But, as other posts on this forum have pointed out, the (HD) component output and the (SD) s-video/composite outputs are not simultaneously active. You can toggle between them without too much trouble, except that you must toggle the DST and your TV's input (I have a macro programmed on my remote to do this). No, you won't see a noticeable improvement from your cable or analog channels. It will be about on par with what you TV does to upconvert (your TV upconversion might look a tad better).

You might also consder the Samsung SIR T150, since you only want OTA and cable. The Samsung is $100 or so less than the Toshiba, but does not have DirecTV capability. However, the SIR T150 does not tune analog channels -- you could leave your TV to do that.
