Question on Component to VGA recording quality

Okay, I think I have a solution to my problem. I basically want to make my own Tivo device out of MuthTV, but I still want to be able to record ALL of my cable channels, HD and SD. I talked to TWC here in Houston and they said that thier decoder box outputs to Component only.

I plan to covert the Component to VGA and then record the VGA stream via a MythTV compatible capture card (haven't decided which one). Is this possible or worth it?

I will also have an IR blaster to the TWC HD Decoder Box to switch stations.

Please let me know if this is feasable and if I will notice any degredation of video quality?

Thank you.

*bump*
I'd double check on the component only part.

Most cable boxes out there down convert all HD content to s-video, so you should be able to get a feed off that.
why don't you just record HD via firewire? so simple
Because he wants to be able to record all his channels to a Linux PC. Not possible with 5c flagging.

I'd check to see if SVideo is possible as well.
What's the use of S-Video if I want to output it to a HDTV? Isn't that like getting a Porsche and putting crappy regular leaded gas and driving it in rush-hour traffic.

I have Houston TimeWarner cable, the decoder box outputs via Component only (as I was told). I want to get the HD signal, convert it to VGA, input into a capture card, use it with custom PVR (MythTV or something else) and playback onto HDTV, just like I was using a Tivo.
If what you are saying is that you wish to record the HD signal on your PC, you will not be able to do that for less than $5,000. Please see the many, many, many other threads that deal with this issue. It is not feasible, and not cheap.
Okay, so I won't be able to do it for less than $5,000, but would the image "quality" make it "look" like HDTV if I get the signal, convert it to VGA RGB, capture and record the signal, and display it on an HDTV?

The Hauppauge can take in VGA signal and up to 1080i and record that.

which card is that?
Maybe the WinTV-HD

Sorry, but that doesn't capture VGA, nor do any other HDTV cards, the VGA input is there strictly for passthrough.

As madpoet said:

It costs $5000 or more to capture uncompressed (ie component/vga/dvi) HD. And it's not user-friendly.
