I currently have a dish 625 DVR receiver and just got a 46 inch Sony LCD 1080, 120 mhz. Anyway, if I upgrade to the VIP622, connecting with an HDMI cable, will I get a better picture without subscribing to the HD channels through Dish? Bear with me, I'm a newbie.

I seriously doubt you will see any difference in picture quality. After all, SD is SD, no matter what receiver you have. I noticed no change when I upgraded my 501 receiver to the Vip622.

Also, you will have to pay an "HD Enabling" fee to have an HD receiver without an HD package(currently $7.00, changing to $5.00 in Feb).

I would just add the $10.00 HD package and be done with it.

HDMI Guy has a point. Pay the extra money and get the HD channels. Your TV will then shine and then you can wonder like the rest of us when all channels will be HD.

Jeff

You know what else I wonder. I wonder when certain channels like E!, ABC Family, and Disney Channel will start showing real HD instead of just upconverting SD content and passing it off as HD.

I was referring to Nick's statement: "After all, SD is SD, no matter what receiver you have." That is an untrue statement.

I would disagree somewhat.

It depends on the STB and how it's setup.

How good is the signal feed (S/N ratio, levels, etc.)

The make/model/type of TV accepting the signal(s).

Cables and distances.

User setup/cablibration of the gear.

And... many other variables....

The bottom line is that SD is SD and you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear. Poor deinterlacing or upscaling is not always STB dependant.
