OK, so I've seen a lot of designs that call for setting the drivers off of the center axis on the front of a speaker. A prime example is the speaker plans given for the Recession buster kit, plans here . Most noticeably, the sealed variant is vertically aligned.

What gives?

Just like moving a subwoofer around in a room, moving a woofer around in a box will change the modes inside the box. ( resonanaces )

Boxnotes ( a free downloadable program ) will show you the effects of moving the driver around in the box.

Sometimes, it is done for purely aesthetic reasons.

offsetting a tweeter is done to reduce the effects of the baffle diffraction. this usually results in a smoother on axis response at the expense of worse off axis response. A tool like the baffle diffraction simulator or the edge will show you this.
