I have two sources for HDTV in to my 433-CMX. One is a HTPC for OTA HD signals, and the other is a Motorola 5100 for HD cable signals. Both have the ability to select output resolutions (specifically 720p and 1080i).

Most HDTV is broadcast at 1080i, however ABC and ESPN are both 720p.

Here is my question: Since the 433-CMX is 1024 x 768 and if I'm watching either ABC or ESPN, would I get better picture quality by setting the output to 720p, rather than 1080i? Would this result in less scaling because the output resolution is closer to 768, or does it just not matter?

I've tried changing it, but it's hard to compare so maybe it really doesn't matter. Just curious.

Bill,

I have the SAT520 HD D*TV receiver connected to my 433CMX. I did some testing and I found out that I like everything running at 720P. I use my HTPC to surf the net and as my primary DVD player. I setup the HTPC to run at 1280x768 through the DVI port on the 5002 card.

Can you set your HD receiver to output native resolution and let the plasma do the scaling?

As I mentioned above, both of my HD receivers (HTPC and Motorola 5100) can be set to output either 720p or 1080i.

Since the native resolution of the 433-CMX is 1024 X 768, the 433 is going to do some scaling whether it receives a 1080i signal or a 720p signal

I've messed around changing the receiver output from 1080i to 720p when receiving a 720p signal, but haven't noticed much difference. Just wondering if there is a (best) receiver output setting for a signal that is being broadcast at 720p.

On the other side of the coin is the question of what happens if I leave the receiver set at 720p when I'm receiving a 1080i signal? Would that degrade the original 1080i signal? Would that mean the original signal gets scaled twice (once by the receiver converting 1080i to 720p, and then by the plasma scaling 720p to 768)? As you can tell, I'm a rookie at this scaling stuff.

Thats a good question Bill. I too have the 433 w/Zenith 520 box and could not really telll the difference between 720p and 1080I. I was watching ESPN Sunday night football in HD and was switching it around. I assume that since ABC uses 720p, then the optimal position would be 720 on the Zenith. I really dont know.

I have the Sammy TS-160 DirecTV/OTA receiver which also does 720p or 1080i. I leave it on 720p - I couldn't really see a difference between the two, and the TVP-1000+ is much happier with 720p.
