Question on Panasonic DMR-85H Hookup

586 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mbtobe
OK, I'm an old retired guy who's brand new to this DVD recording thing, and I have a really basic question about hooking up my new Panasonic DMR-85H.

First of all, I have DishNetwork, so the TVGuide issue is moot.

Currently, I have the DishNet 75 Ohm cable going into the DishNet receiver, and another 75 Ohm cable going from the DishNet receiver to the Panasonic DMR-85H. From the Panasonic DMR-85H I have a 75 Ohm cable going into the main cable/antenna input on the TV, and an S-video/audio cables going from L1 output into a second input circuit on the TV.

Is this reasonable? do I really need the 75 Ohm from the Panasonic to the TV? Can I replace the 75 Ohm between the DishNet Receiver to the Panasonic with an S-video/audio cable set? If I do, will I get any better picture / recording?

Thanks, and please excuse the simplicity of these questions. As I say, I'm a beginner with this DVD recording stuff.

Yes, yes and yes. If you don't plan to watch everything through the DVD recorder, you can just hook it to the tv through s-video. You'll get a far superior picture. You should also consider going from the Dish box to the DVD via s-video - it'll produce an excellent recording, much better, imho, than using coax.

Thanks for the quick response, StuJac, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean here. I'm currently running the signal through the DVD recorder via both routes.

Are you suggesting that I re-route the 75 Ohm cable to go direct from the DishNet box to the TV, and use S-video/audio cable for a single connection to the DVD recorder?

Or, are you recommending that I dump the 75 Ohm cable altogether and go exclusively from the DishNet box on with S-video?

Thanks,

Tom

I would also suggest that you replace the 75 ohm cable between the DVD recorder/player and the TV with component cable. You will see a huge difference in the PQ for dvd playback.
I'd connect the DishNet receiver to the E85 with s-video and run s-video from the E85 to the TV. This will give you best picture for recording, watching tv and watching recordings and other DVDs.

You could also run an 75ohm/coax cable direct from the DishNet reciever to the TV, which would let you watch TV without having to power up the E85. Or if the Dish receiver has more than one set up s-video/composite outputs and the TV has more than one set of inputs, use those instead of coax.
Thanks to all of you for your advice. This afternoon I pulled the TV out (42-inch Sony projection model) and re-connected everything through S-video, and yes, it does make a world of difference. I do like the idea of running straight from the DishNet box to the TV via coax, so I'll make that connection, too.

Again, thanks for the advice.

Just curious, why would you use svideo from dvd recorder/player to tv rather than component?

Component connection will produce a vastly superior connection and PQ than svideo for dvd's (other than those recorded on the E 85).
Please enlighten me. What do you mean by component connection? Is that those odd colored (one of them is green, I think) jacks on the back of the DVD recorder? I'm not sure I have compatible jacks on the TV.

Tom
Thats exactly what I am referring to. That connection will produce a far better PQ than svideo.
