The upconvert is performed after the data is read from DVD. DVDs do not support 480p, and the machine always records 480i to disc.


The upconvert will work as a loopthrough from the S-video inputs. However, the signal goes through the MPEG2 encode/decode cycle, which has certain side-effects. If you set the machine to HQ speed, these side-effects are usually very small, however, usually appearing only as break-up of thin horizontal lines of the sort often generated by news graphics, for example.


(Yes, the loop-through quality will depend on which recording speed the machine is set to, even though you are not actually recording at the time.)
