Question on updating my audio for HT?

800 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  WiWavelength
I have just purchased a new Panasonic Z1 plasma and Panasonic BD80 Blu-Ray player. My old system consisted of a 2006 vintage panny plasma and OPPO upconverting DVD player along with a ten year old Onkyo HT-R500 5.1reciever. I have great speakers, Paradigm Studio 20's. I was thinking I may be loosing out when recievers that can process Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master are out there. I was thinking of the Onkyo TX-SR308 5.1. Would this be worth the move to this reciever?

Don't know if your on such a tight budget but those studio 20's deserve a better AVR. Anthem which is part of Paradigm just came out with a line of AVR's that start at $999 w/all the bells and whistles you'll need for you new blu-ray & TV. There's also some fine other choices that I'm sure will be coming along from some other people.
At only a slight increase in cost you can go with the Onkyo HT-RC260 that is essentially the same as the Onkyo TX-SR608 that has THX certification. The 260 does not have THX certification but apparently has an identical amplifier section. My 260 replaced an 8 yr old THX receiver. I no longer need an optical switching box and all sorts of connections going to my plasma. Just a bunch of HDMI into the receiver and one HDMI from the receiver to the plasma. The new audio codecs produce much clearer sound (when using Blu-ray having uncompressed audio).
