Hello :)

I've seen many DVD players that can play back a PAL DVD and convert it to NTSC. As many of you know there are far too many DVD players that do this incorrectly (and many more which don't do it at all). I personally have a Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 and I am mostly very happy with it as I feel the quality of conversion is as good if not better than the very popular Malata and JVC options.

However, I want a second unit for my den and while I would probably be happy with another Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 I was doing some research and found out that SAMPO very recently (late 2002) made a model called the DVE-612N and that this model is able to properly convert PAL to NTSC without any aspect ratio problems. This is a first for SAMPO as all other SAMPO DVD players totally screw up the aspect ratio when doing PAL to NTSC conversion.

The SAMPO DVE-612N sounds very promising because it is fairly cheap, does PAL to NTSC properly and can handle many different formats very well such as DVD, MiniDVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, VCD, SVCD and even raw mpg files. It also does MP3 as well.

However, most of what I read about this model was on the Area 450 website which is a website created by and for SAMPO fans. So I guess I take what they say with a "grain of salt".

So I come here to the AVS forum seeking feedback from anyone who actually has the SAMPO DVE-612N

Thank You!

P.S.

Please note that SAMPO also makes a very similiar unit with the model number DVE-612 but that it is a completely different and apparently inferior model to the much newer DVE-612N not just in construction but also in terms of the chip it uses and capabilities etc. Oddly they look very similiar on the outside but on the inside they are completely different.

Anyone with one of these care to comment?

I'm still interested in buying one.
